Xenophobia in Africa can be traced to decades past. In 1969, Prime Minister Kofi Busia of Ghana passed the Aliens Compliance Order which led to the deportation of thousands of other Africans, predominantly Nigerians.
It's a common belief that Africans were passive about their independence until the 1950s. However, today, more than a century ago, in 1923, Nigeria’s first political party, the Nigerian National Democratic Party, was founded, by Herbert Macaulay (pic). Its purpose was to oppose colonialism and promote democracy by increasing Nigerians’ political involvement. The party won all seats to the Legislative Council in British Nigeria that year, and won all seats in the next two elections, in 1928 and 1933.
He was renown for his bravery under heavy gunfire, defying death on several occasions. He finally fled Biafra just before it's collapse. He died in 1996.

Known as the bullet proof man of Biafra, Welsh born Taffy Williams was a Major in the Biafran Army.
John Clarkson an abolitionist was sworn in as the first Governor. After the abolishment of slave trade by the British, recaptured slaves were settled in Freetown
Freetown was formally founded in 1792 as a sanctuary for ex-slaves and free born African-Americans. These African-Americans were Novia Scotia settlers, loyalists of the British during the American War of Independence. They were taken to Freetown by the Sierra Leone Company.
Sarah Boone invented the modern ironing board, streamlining the ironing process for women's clothing. Her patented design, awarded in 1892, made her one of the first black women to receive a patent.
Only 13% of land was available to Africans. This act followed the 1905 General Pass Regulations Act which prohibited blacks from voting and limited them to certain areas. The act was eventually repealed in 1991.
SEEDS OF SEGREGATION
The seeds of segregation in South Africa were sown long before the commencement of apartheid in 1948. In 1913, the Natives Land Act was passed by the Union Parliament. The act decreed that black south africans were forbidden to buy lands from the whites.
While King Idris was in a Turkish Spa recovering from an ailment, a group of young Libyan Army Officers led by Muammar Gaddafi toppled his government and abolished the monarchy. This was in 1969 and King Idris had to seek asylum in Egypt having been sentenced to death in absentia
Charles Taylor on August 11, 2003 resigned as president of Liberia. The warlord flew into Nigeria on exile where he lived in Calabar. However in 2006, new Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf requested for his extradition and her request granted by the Nigerian government.

In 1976, the Nigeria government imposed what was known as the Mandela tax on Nigerian civil servants. Nigerian workers gave 2% of their salaries to aid the liberation cause.
Nigeria 🇳🇬 government gave $3.7m in direct financial aid to support the anti-apartheid struggle.
Nigeria also provided free university education for thousands of South African students in exile and issued thousands of Nigerian passports to exiled South Africans, allowing them to travel and lobby internationally.

Taylor tried to escape but was arrested at the Nigerian border with Cameroon. He was extradited to Liberia and tried at The Hague where he was eventually convicted for war crimes in 2012. He remains in jail till this day.

RECLAIM YOUR COUNTRY! On this day in 1994, Chief M.K.O. Abiola declared himself the lawful President of Nigeria in Epetedo, Lagos Island. In the declaration he urged Nigerians to reclaim their country. He was later arrested and charged with treason. MKO died on July 7, 1998.
