It became a running joke when it started becoming increasingly clear that it was a bad deal (logically) for men. The benefits (pussy, mixed family, a woman to call their own, etc) don’t outweigh the risks and drawbacks (no legal rights over the children, no blood rights over children, gated parenting, etc), especially culturally.

We’ve become brutally aware of the types of men that women procreate with out of whatever dysfunction, yet when they’re tired, stressed out, or burned out from their life decisions, that’s when they settle for the men who accept becoming a stepfather. They TYPICALLY bring their older, heavier, more jaded, more guarded versions of themselves to these men — often not out of abundance, love, and choice but rather desperation and exhaustion.

I think once more men became more aware of how much of a raw/sucker deal it is (in general), the legs just completely fell off. Men also realized amongst themselves that the types of men who accept becoming a stepfather are men who typically cannot compete to procreate with better, childless women. So men being men (not wanting to be a sucker), it became another stratifying mechanism for hierarchy. Men who marry women with other men’s children, TYPICALLY do so out of sexual scarcity and lack of success with women who are better options. Are there’re few exceptions? Yes - but the overwhelming majority are not.

It’s a cold game.
