The Rivers State Police Command, under the proactive leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, has intensified security operations and deployed robust safety measures across the State ahead of the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir and Children’s Day celebrations.
This strategic security initiative is aimed at guaranteeing a peaceful, crime-free, and hitch-free festive period for all residents and visitors across Rivers State.
In line with this commitment, the Command has activated comprehensive operational strategies, including intensified confidence-building patrols, intelligence-led policing, strategic deployment of tactical and conventional personnel, surveillance operations, stop-and-search duties, and enhanced visibility policing in critical locations and other vulnerable areas across the State.
Security presence has also been reinforced around worship centres, recreational facilities, markets, motor parks, highways, and other public spaces expected to witness increased human and vehicular movement during the celebrations.
The Commissioner of Police reassures the good people of Rivers State of the Command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property before, during, and after the festivities. In a strategic effort to deepen inter-agency cooperation and reinforce security coordination in Rivers State, the Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Rivers State Command, Ambrose Wale Akinrinsola (Esq), pcc, mni, paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, psc, mnips, at the Command Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
The meeting provided an avenue for both security heads to reaffirm their shared commitment to intelligence sharing, operational synergy, and coordinated security efforts aimed at strengthening public safety and maintaining peace across the State.

The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened by the tragic incident which reportedly claimed the lives of three children from the same family. The unfortunate development has generated widespread grief and concern within the State.
The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, psc, mnips, extends his heartfelt condolences and profound sympathy to the bereaved family during this difficult and painful period. He prays that God grants the family the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
The Commissioner of Police wishes to assure the affected family and the general public that the Command has commenced a thorough investigation into the incident. DISCIPLINARY ACTION INITIATED AGAINST POLICE OFFICER OVER ALLEGED NEGLIGENCE
The Rivers State Police Command is aware of a publication currently circulating in the media concerning the alleged conduct of a police officer attached to SCID Rivers State Police Command over an escape of suspect.
Following a preliminary review of the matter, ASP Ekawhe Thomas, AP/No. 196838, has been detained and formally issued a query in line with existing disciplinary procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Command further states that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspect currently at large in connection with the incident, while a thorough investigation continues to ensure that justice is served.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, psc, mnips, expressed deep displeasure over the incident and reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to professionalism, discipline, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.
The Commissioner of Police emphasized that the Command will not condone any form of misconduct, negligence, or abuse of office by its personnel, warning that any officer found culpable after investigation will be dealt with decisively in accordance with extant laws and disciplinary regulations.

RIVERS STATE POLICE COMMAND REAFFIRMS RESTRICTIONS ON TRICYCLES AND MOTORCYCLE WARNS PASSANGERS AGAINST ENTERING “ONE-CHANCE” VEHICLE AND ANNOUNCES NEW SECURITY MEASURES
In line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, psc, mnips, the Rivers State Police Command wishes to remind members of the public that the existing restriction on the movement of tricycles from 10:00 pm remains fully in force across the State. Operators and owners are strongly advised to comply strictly with this directive.
This enforcement takes immediate effect as part of intensified efforts to curb the growing menace of “one-chance” robberies, abductions, and other violent crimes in Rivers State, with a stern warning that any individual or group found involved in such criminal activities will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.
In furtherance to the Command’s proactive crime prevention strategy, CP Adepoju has also directed the implementation of the following security measures which will take effect from 18th May, 2026.
* No Commercial Keke-Bus should be fitted with tinted glass or covered in any manner capable of concealing the identity of passengers or occupants. Any commercial keke-Bus found violating this directive will be impounded, while the operator will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
* The covering, alteration, driving without plate number or concealment of vehicle plate numbers is strictly prohibited. The Commissioner of Police has directed the arrest of offenders without hesitation.
* The use of unregistered vehicles within the State is prohibited and will no longer be tolerated. Owners and operators of such vehicles are advised to regularize their documentation without delay.
The Command further emphasizes the importance of collaboration of local security outfits, community stakeholders with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) within their respective jurisdictions to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve coordinated responses and enhance public safety across the State.
SAFETY TIPS AGAINST “ONE-CHANCE” CRIMES
Members of the public are advised to observe the following precautionary measures to avoid falling victim to “one-chance” criminals:
* Avoid boarding tricycles, motorcycles, or vehicles from isolated or poorly lit locations, especially at night.
* Be cautious of vehicles carrying suspicious or unusually aggressive occupants.
* Avoid entering vehicles with covered or heavily tinted interiors where occupants cannot be clearly identified.
* Share your trip details or destination with trusted relatives or friends whenever possible.
* Refrain from openly displaying cash, mobile phones, jewelry or other valuables while in transit.
* Ensure the vehicle can be opened from outside and inside on entry.
* Don't agree to sit in the middle of already seated Passengers.
* Members of the public are advised to discreetly document or photograph/snap the vehicle and its registration number before boarding, and send to a relation to the notice of the occupants. when you do not feel safe insist on getting off the vehicle immediately.
* In the event of any suspicious movement or emergency, immediately contact the nearest Police Division or the Command’s emergency lines below.

CONTINUOUS SUSTAINED CRIME-FIGHTING DRIVE YIELDS CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL SECURITY OUTFIT, RECOVERY OF FIREARMS, AND ARREST OF FIVE SUSPECTS
In furtherance of the strategic crime-fighting initiatives and proactive policing agenda of the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, psc, mnips, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, on the intensification of intelligence-led policing and the clampdown on illegal arms and criminal groups nationwide, the Rivers State Police Command has continued to record significant operational successes in its sustained efforts to dismantle criminal networks, curb the proliferation of unlawful firearms and rid the State of all forms of illegal security formations.
In this major breakthrough, operatives of the Command State Intelligence Department (SID), acting on credible and actionable intelligence, successfully conducted a targeted operation on 6th May, 2026, at about 1400hrs, in Sakpenwa, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State. The operation led to the crackdown of an illegal security outfit operating under the guise of a so-called “Civilian Joint Taskforce.”
The operation resulted in the arrest of five suspects, namely:
* Precious Mene (Female, 31 years), indigene of Gokana Local Government Area
* Blessing Felix (Female, 25 years), indigene of Sagbama Local Government Area
* Barine Gaviga (Male, 32 years), indigene of Gokana Local Government Area
* Joy Ndornyie (Female, 26 years), indigene of Tai Local Government Area
* Muhammed Ibrahim (Male, 35 years), indigene of Jigawa State
During the operation, exhibit recovered includes: three locally fabricated pump-action rifles from the suspects.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the group was operating unlawfully under the false pretense of providing security services. The Rivers State Police Command wishes to categorically state that there is no recognised or legally authorised security outfit known as “Civilian Joint Taskforce” operating under the authority of the Nigeria Police Force or any approved government security agency within Rivers State.
The Command further reiterates that no civilian is permitted by law to bear, possess, or operate firearms without lawful authorization. Consequently, any individual or group found engaging in illegal security activities or unlawful possession of arms will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the extant laws of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria.
Investigations is still ongoing to unravel the full extent of the group’s activities and any other unauthorized operations within the State.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, psc, mnips, has reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Command to intelligence-led policing, public safety, and the protection of lives and property across Rivers State. He further warned criminal elements and unlawful groups to desist from all forms of illegal activities or face the full weight of the law.

POLICE RESPONSE TO ONLINE PUBLICATION ON JOURNALIST ASSAULT: VICTIM RESCUED, 13
SUSPECTS ARRESTED
The Rivers State Police Command is aware of a publication currently circulating online regarding an alleged incident involving a journalist. Upon receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, psc, mnips, promptly took decisive action by inviting the journalist to provide a firsthand account, while a comprehensive investigation into the matter commenced.
The facts available indicate that one journalist, Mr. Allwell Ene, while conducting a solo investigative activity in an area marked as black spot, known for criminal activities and constantly raided by police was attacked and physically assaulted by suspected hoodlums for video recording them.
Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Olu-Obasanjo Division swiftly mobilised operatives to the scene to rescue the journalist.
In line with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, operatives of the Command has been jointly carrying out coordinated operations within the Olu-Obasanjo axis and adjoining areas. Currently, a total of thirteen (13) suspects have been arrested. The suspects are believed to be involved in various criminal activities, including phone theft and the harassment of law-abiding members of the public. Investigations are ongoing and efforts are being intensified to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
The Commissioner of Police advises journalists and private investigators to refrain from undertaking investigative activities alone, particularly in high-risk or crime-prone areas. He strongly encourages collaboration with the Police and urges members of the public to always provide credible information to security agencies to enhance public safety and maintain law and order across Rivers State.
The Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and assures the public of sustained efforts to eradicate criminal elements within the State.
