No more excuses...
One of the biggest problems that most Nigerian First Class graduates have is that they just get the good grades, and that’s it.
No leadership. No extracurriculars. Zero volunteering.
This is why you might apply for a scholarship and get rejected.
Some don’t even have any publications in their name.
So it’s just pass exam and that’s all.
When you apply for a top scholarship, you’re not competing with Nigerians or your fellow country people.
You’re competing with the rest of the world.
A 20-year old in the US has built a startup.
A 1st year University student in the UK has started their own NGO
A third year Indian student has built a mobile app with 10,000 users.
And all these people also make First Class as well.
When you apply for a scholarship with these people, do you think you stand a chance with just your First Class?
When I applied for Gates, what got me in was my NGO that I had started in 2014.
I started an NGO called She in Charge. And I was doing women empowerment.
I recruited about 15 volunteers and we would leave Calabar and go to rural areas in Akamkpa, Odukpani, etc, to go talk to girls in secondary school.
The NGO didn’t get any funds. I was funding it from my pocket.
When some of my mum’s colleagues heard what I was doing, they started adding small monies to the NGO, which we used to buy books and school materials for the girls.
When I had my scholarship interview with the Gates Cambridge Trust, my NGO is all they wanted to discuss.
They were fanscinated by the fact that I saw a problem, and took the initiative to solve it.
They also acknowledged that I exercised leadership by recruiting volunteers, organising campaigns, and executing them.
And how they interpret this is that if this person could do this with limited resources, that means they are a real leader.
If we give her this scholarship, she stands a high chance of being a scholar that will change the world and we can brag that we were part of that journey.
Even when I interviewed for PTDF scholarship, I went for the interview with all my medals and trophies from debate and public speaking championships I have won, certificates of multiple conferences I have attended, and a print-out of my publication that I made with my BSc supervisor.
When it was time for my interview I spread all of them on the table and the panelist started laughing and saying “madam there’s no need to interview you na, what else will we ask you that we have not seen right here in front of us?”
We just had a friendly chat, I left, and I got the scholarship.
One guy came for the interview with physical copies of books he had written as an undergraduate.
The competition is steep.
If you’ve already graduated with a First Class, and you don’t have any leadership skills, it might be hard to help you here.
But this is what we are looking to fix with the WomanUp program. Our scholars must lead while studying.
If you’re currently an undergraduate and hoping to graduate with top grades and get a scholarship, think about this carefully.
Start thinking about how you can exert your leadership.
