Here’s the history behind one of Aggieland’s most powerful traditions…

The cannon you hear on game day — the Spirit of ’02 — is a 3-inch M1902 field gun discovered by cadets in 1974 near Easterwood Airport while cutting wood for Bonfire. After the Corps restored it, the cannon became part of campus life and by 1984 was firing at football games.

By the late 1980s, it had become a game-day staple. Operated by Parsons Mounted Cavalry, the Spirit of ’02 fires before march-in, when the team enters, and after every Aggie touchdown.

More than just a sound, this cannon stands as a proud reminder of our military heritage , the Corps of Cadets, and the spirit that defines Texas A&M.

Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko said on his SEC Teleconference call that Marcel Reed is still the starting QB for the Aggies despite considering putting in Brady Hart vs. Alabama.

He was asked why Reed is still the starter: “We’re going to do what we believe is the right thing to do for us to win on Saturdays.”
