🚨 Press Release by Deir al-Balah Municipality: A Real Water Catastrophe Hits Deir al-Balah Following the Targeting of “Sahil 6” Well and Its Complete Shutdown
The Municipality of Deir al-Balah announces that the “Sahil 6” well, located in the Al-Baraka area, has been bombed, resulting in the complete destruction of its electric generator and other critical components, rendering it entirely out of service. This well was the last main water source still supplying the Al-Baraka reservoir, which is a key facility in the city's water system and provides water to large areas of the city.
With the “Sahil 6” well out of service, Deir al-Balah is entering an unprecedented phase of water shortage. This comes amid continuous waves of displacement toward the city, leaving densely populated areas — including Al-Baraka, Al-Masha’la, Al-Bi’ah, Al-Hikr, and Al-Mu’askar — deprived of water, especially given that all other primary water sources have already been cut off.
This destruction follows the bulldozing of the “Sahil 5” well, in addition to the complete cutoff of “Mekorot” water since January 23, 2025, and the shutdown of the central seawater desalination plant due to a power outage since March 9, 2025.
The situation has worsened further in recent days as it has become impossible to operate the remaining wells — Al-Ma’ani, Al-Qastal, Al-Muntazah, Al-Mazra’ah, and Al-Sinai’iyah — due to the danger and inaccessibility of their locations. It’s worth noting that the “Al-Sinai’iyah” well is one of the largest and most critical sources feeding the Al-Aqsa reservoir, from which water is pumped to other neighborhoods in the city.
Accordingly, we affirm that the water sector in Deir al-Balah is facing a catastrophe and is on the brink of complete collapse in every sense of the word, particularly in light of rising temperatures and the growing needs of both residents and displaced populations.
Therefore, the Municipality of Deir al-Balah urgently appeals to all humanitarian and international organizations and concerned institutions to immediately intervene to help provide alternative water sources, ensure the operation of the remaining critical water sources, exert pressure to restore Mekorot water supply and resume the operation of the central seawater desalination plant located in the southern part of the city, and provide the necessary support to prevent the total collapse of the water system and halt the worsening humanitarian disaster faced by the population.
