Several years ago a Meck County Commissioner and others floated the idea of South Charlotte seceding from the City of Charlotte and forming a new incorporated town called "Providence".

It was proposed to be made up of zip codes 28270, 277 and 226, and the Charlotte portion of 28105.

The reason was crime, and lack of city services versus the stunning amount of tax revenue the area provides.

Because of the value of homes in South Charlotte, the residents in these zip codes provide a disproportional amount of tax revenue to the city and yet receive the lowest per capital share of city services.

Beyond police, fire, and sanitation, roads also see a decisively lower share of services.

In other words South Charlotte provides an unfair amount of tax revenue considering the level of city services it receives.

Further more South Charlotte has basically zero representation within our city government and frankly Charlotte has become too big to manage.

Maybe it's time to revisit this concept?
