#CFTC’s latest update shows a mixed bag for managed money traders in Chicago. Wheat, corn and soybean positions remain on the short side, but corn shorts were reduced by 15K lots, to 29K lots short. Soybeans and wheat positioning by this group both extended their net shorts.
Most recent GB Corn Returns data (W/E 24th Oct) shows the lowest volume of grains reported since late August, at 110Kt. #Wheat reported amounts to 75Kt and #barley 26Kt. The draw-down in prices of late and ongoing planting struggles are likely key factors influencing sales.
According to latest #AHDB cereals usage data, the UK’s maltsters, distiller and brewers sector reported to AHDB total #barley usage of 145Kt in August, slightly below July’s barley usage level and also slightly below volumes used in July 2023. Wheat usage was 98Kt in July.
According to latest #AHDB cereals usage data, the UK’s ethanol & starch sector reported to AHDB total #wheat usage of 90Kt in August, roughly the same volume as in July, but slightly below July 2023.
According to latest #AHDB cereals usage data, the UK’s milling sector reported to AHDB total #wheat usage of 496Kt in August, roughly the same volume as in July. Of this total, 385Kt was sourced from #UK supplies and 112Kt from overseas.
According to latest #AHDB cereals usage data, the integrated compound feed sector reported to AHDB total #wheat usage of 344Kt in August, roughly the same volume as in July. Total #barley usage for August sits at 100Kt, also similar to July’s barley number.
#CFTC reported managed money funds in #Chicago bought back a significant 44K lots #corn from their net short position and 13K lots #soybeans for W/E 8th October. For wheat, the same crowd sold 6K lots in CBOT, 8K lots in #MGE, but bought back 9K lots in #Kansas.
Traded #wheat reported through the UKs #Corn_Returns for W/E 10th October show 164Kt, of which the majority was traded for the nearby month. Total #barley reported sat at 40Kt and #oats 11Kt, bringing total weekly reporting of grains to 215Kt, slightly below the previous week.
Latest UK trade data from #HMRC shows UK #rapeseed imports for August at 127K the largest August imports since 2021. Cumulative Jul-Aug are just slightly above 127Kt.
Latest UK trade data from #HMRC shows UK #maize imports for August at 232K the largest August imports since 2020. Cumulative Jul-Aug, at 515Kt, is the largest since at least 2012 and likely a record.
