When Bakira Ruyondo emerged as the best UPDF officer cadet in 2025 here in Uganda, some people were quick to call it a favour to the Banyankore tribe or Tutsi, whatever they call it, as though the achievement had nothing to do with his own ability, discipline and hard work.

Just days ago, Bakira graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom and was awarded the prestigious International Sword, given to the outstanding international cadet in his intake after being judged the strongest overall performer in leadership, military skills, physical and mental strength, attitude and overall performance throughout the rigorous 44 week course.

So, was this another “favour” to the tribe?

We need to agree that UPDF under the leadership of @mkainerugaba has been fully transformed into a force where merit comes first, regardless of tribe. If you are qualified, disciplined and capable, you earn your place and the recognition that comes with it.
