📣IGAD Advances Regional Dialogue on Irregular Migration Along the Eastern Route
At the High-Level Technical Experts Meeting on migration along the Eastern Route (Red Sea Route crisis), Amb @meigague, Director @IGADHealthS, highlighted the urgent need for a collective response to one of the world’s most dangerous and neglected migration corridors.
He stressed the importance of a coordinated and inclusive approach involving IGAD Member States, as well as countries of transit and destination, including Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
The Eastern Route, linking the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula via the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, remains a strategic corridor—but also a high-risk route marked by trafficking in persons, migrant smuggling, and frequent loss of lives.
He also recalled key legal and policy frameworks guiding regional action, including the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, the African Union Agenda 2063, and the Migration Policy Framework for Africa.
👉 He called for strengthened regional cooperation and concrete action to ensure safe, orderly, and rights-based migration governance.
At the Technical Experts Meeting in Tadjoura, Djibouti, H.E. Said Nouh Hassan, Minister of Interior of Djibouti and Chair of IGAD, called for stronger regional cooperation to address irregular migration along the Eastern Route.
IGAD, the Government of Djibouti, IOM, the European Union, SIDA, and partners have convened in Tadjourah, #Djibouti, for a technical experts meeting on irregular migration, trafficking in persons, smuggling of migrants, and safe migration governance along the Eastern Route.
