Every year, #Ghana 🇬🇭 tragically loses over 1,000 people to drowning.

But Ghana acted swiftly. A powerful national coalition - uniting the Ghana National Fire Service @gnfsofficial, Police @GhPoliceService, @Ghana_Navy, Ambulance Service, and academic partners such as @BloombergDotOrg, @HopkinsINJURIES — is now working to make the country's waters safer for everyone.

This afternoon, @Makerere University School of Public Health Dean, Prof. @RhodaWanyenze, together with Dr. @DavidMusoke14, Chair of the Department of Disease Control and Environmental Health, and Dr. @Oporiah, Head of @TRIADUnit, were delighted to host Prof. William Weiss and Dr. James Kumwenda from @JohnsHopkinsSPH.

The engagement highlighted the long-standing collaboration between MakSPH and Johns Hopkins, spanning over three decades in areas including health systems strengthening, public health training, supportive supervision, and research collaboration.

Primary school children face daily risks on roads. Many walk long distances to and from school, often along busy highways while others rely on motorcycles without adequate protective gear. Due to their age, limited ability to judge speed and distance and natural playfulness, children are vulnerable to road dangers. This is reflected in national road crash statistics, where children frequently appear among victims either as pedestrians or passengers losing their lives or sustaining serious injuries.

It is against this background that we have taken deliberate steps to extend road safety campaigns to primary schools. These initiatives aim to equip pupils with essential knowledge and practical skills to keep themselves safe. The campaign emphasizes simple but life-saving principles such as safe road crossing, visibility, and responsible road behavior.

We have also distributed helmets and reflective jackets. Reflective jackets make children more visible to motorists, while helmets provide critical head protection in the event of a crash.

It is important to note that ensuring the safety of children on the road is a shared responsibility. Parents and guardians are strongly urged to take an active role in safeguarding their children. Motorists and the general public are equally called upon to exercise caution, particularly in school zones and residential areas.

We remain committed to securing our children on the roads through sustained safety enforcement, education and community engagement. These efforts aim to foster a culture of responsible road use and reduce the number of preventable crashes involving children.

We thank our partners @itmsug for their invaluable contribution in providing child helmets and reflective jackets. Their support has enhanced the effectiveness of this particular campaign.

🚧 @WorldBankAfrica implementation support mission is assessing progress this week on the 103.08 km Koboko–Yumbe–Moyo road upgrade in Uganda’s West Nile sub-region.

The mission is reviewing overall performance, including safeguards, fiduciary compliance, and follow-up actions from previous reviews. It is also holding stakeholder engagements in Yumbe and Moyo districts, alongside site inspections along the corridor.

As of 31 March 2026, physical progress stands at 38.1% (above the 33% target), reflecting steady implementation.

The project is scheduled for completion in July 2027 and is expected to enhance regional connectivity and trade upon completion.
