In 1900, the British demanded the supreme symbol of the Ashanti people: the Golden Stool, in an attempt to colonize them.

Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of the Ashanti led the resistance against them. She was the last woman to ever lead a major war against the colonists in Africa.

The British Empire demanded something far greater than gold or territory from the Ashanti people. They demanded the Golden Stool, the sacred symbol of the Ashanti nation.

To the Ashanti, the Golden Stool was not simply a royal object. It represented the soul, unity, and identity of their people. According to tradition, it carried the spirit of the Ashanti nation and symbolized the bond between past, present, and future generations.

When British officials attempted to take control of it as part of their efforts to dominate the Ashanti Kingdom, one woman rose to defend her people’s heritage.

Her name was Yaa Asantewaa, the Queen Mother of Ejisu.

At a time when many leaders hesitated over how to respond, Yaa Asantewaa delivered a powerful call for resistance. She challenged her people to protect their sovereignty and became the leader of the War of the Golden Stool against British colonial forces.

Her leadership was extraordinary because she stood at the front of a major anti colonial resistance movement during an era when women were often overlooked in recorded military history. She organized fighters, inspired communities, and became a symbol of courage far beyond the Ashanti Kingdom.

Although the British eventually defeated the resistance and exiled Yaa Asantewaa, they never captured the Golden Stool. The sacred symbol remained with the Ashanti people, preserving a piece of their identity that colonial power could not erase.
