The federal government is now facing a deadline to explain the legality of a reporter’s arrest after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained Nashville Noticias journalist Estefany Rodríguez on Wednesday, March 4.

According to her television station, Rodríguez was outside a gym with her husband when several vehicles surrounded her clearly marked news car and agents ordered that she be taken into custody.

Her attorneys argue the arrest may be tied to her reporting on ICE activity and are asking a judge to order her release. The warrant used in the arrest has also raised significant questions.

Court filings in the U.S. District Court for Middle Tennessee present two sharply conflicting versions of events and dispute whether immigration law was properly followed during the arrest.
