We live in Washington State, where new parents qualify for 12 weeks of partially paid bonding leave (plus 4 weeks medical leave for the birthing parent). Our employers both subsidize the difference in salary. We are incredibly lucky, but it should not be up to luck.

It’s pretty surreal to be 1.5 months into my own 4 month paid parental leave (the first 3 months of which @leftcoastsuit is also home for) as the nation debates whether or not everyone deserves this. Our leave feels like a luxury, when it should be a given expectation.

Yes, being a new parent is hard, and the stories about what happens when parents don’t have access to parental leave are devastating. But what happens when both parents do have this time at home? I’ll treasure these moments of joy we’ve been able to share as a new family forever.
