I do not share the ideology of a Viking in 900 AD. In fact I quite object to plunder and pillage on moral grounds. And yet I appreciate The Northman for showing us the world through the perspective of a Viking in 900 AD. This is the magic of film — at least good films. The unique power of the art form. Imposing your own modern worldview on characters from the ancient past is not just (in this case) a desecration of a foundational text of western civilization, but also incredibly boring and narrow and redundant. A refusal to actually do the thing with film that film is uniquely able to do.
