The PM visited Colchester to speak to those involved in the recent Operation PITTING deployment. 16 Med Regt played a vital part in ensuring medical capability was rapidly deployed forward to treat those in need.
OTD 1942: the 2nd @airbornemedics parachute unit was raised. 127 Parachute Field Ambulance formed to provide medical support to 2 Para Bde, 1 AB Div.
They saw service in N. Africa, Italy, then as part of the now independent 2 Para Bde in France and Greece.

Capt Rigby-Jones landed with his Surgical Team along with the 2nd Bn South Staffs. Abandoning their original role, they established a RAP. Around 30 cas were treated by over the next 20hrs. Personnel from 181 stayed in Sicily until 13 July, when they returned to North Africa.
OTD in 1943 - 2,075 British troops boarded gliders in Tunisia bound for Sicily. En route, the gliders encountered strong winds, poor visibility and were subjected to anti-aircraft fire. In the confusion some gliders were released too early and 65 of them crashed into the sea….
…drowning around 252 men including the men of the 181 Air Landing Field Ambulance. Of the six gliders carrying men from 181 only one made it to land. Fortunately however, some the men who had been allocated to the battalions did make it to Sicily.

The traditional formation date of the Airborne Forces is recognised as 22 June 1940 when Sir Winston Churchill signed a memorandum calling for an ‘elite corps of troops’ to form a force of 5,000 paratroopers.
Following the request a parachute training school was established..
at Manchester’s Ringway Airport.
The regiment quickly grew into the 11th Special Air Service Battalion and ultimately, on 1 August 1942, The Parachute Regiment. By the end of the Second World War, the regiment comprised 17 battalions.
