Brent Key on how his players have refocused and moved on after the upset win over Clemson and being ranked in the top 25.
"Coach Saban use to tell us more people die on the way down from Mount Everest than on the way up and you can't relax."
I keep coming back to this question:
Are you willing to sprint when the distance is unknown?
In 2021, Georgia Tech strength coach Lewis Caralla delivered this epic speech to the football team.
If it doesn’t light a fire under you, check your pulse…
He starts with a series of brutal truths:
• Winning isn’t loyal to you
• Winning doesn’t care about you
• Winning doesn’t care how sore you are
• Winning doesn’t care how hard you work
• Winning doesn’t care how much sleep you’ve had
But then comes the line that hit me:
Are you willing to sprint when the distance is unknown?
That mindset is rare.
It demands two things:
1. An unshakable belief in yourself
2. A deep conviction in the mission
If you have one without the other, you won’t last.
You need both.
From what I’ve seen, the greatest things in life are built by people willing to sprint when they can’t see the finish line:
The sprint to support loved ones when they need you most.
The sprint to create something meaningful.
The sprint to serve others and leave a lasting mark.
Your task: Identify those rare pursuits worth sprinting for when the finish line is hidden.
That, to me, is what winning really is.
"And why chase winning? Because the only thing that's guaranteed in life if you don't chase it is losing."
Dan Campbell said, “What makes us what we are? And what we’re going to be? I think it’s that right there. It’s 𝐆𝐑𝐈𝐓.”
“It means we’re unbreakable.”
𝐆𝐑𝐈𝐓 isn’t talent or luck.
𝐆𝐑𝐈𝐓 is a skill.
𝐆𝐑𝐈𝐓 is your ability to endure.
The Evolution of Georgia Defense 🧵
- Evolution of Offensive/Defensive Personnel
- Issue #1: Inability to play 3 down versus spread. Solution = Mint Front (Nickel)
- Issue #2: Inability to quickly align to tempo offenses. Solution = Star travels to pass strength the same as 4 down. Another problem with tempo were long play calls. Solution = One Word Calls. Drill tempo with FastBall Starts
- Evolution of 3rd Down Defense. Answers for athletic QBs that can create off script. Simulated Pressures instead of 5/6 man Pressures.
- Evolution of creating Tackles For Loss
"Marks of good teams are great special teams play and perimeter blocking" - Scott Frost
Why? Because, just like offensive line play, there's not much glory in special teams and perimeter blocking, but both show a team's cultural commitment to selflessness and togetherness.
The key to defeating reach is to set the edge upfield.
To do this remember these 3 steps:
• Drive vertical
• Steer the outside shoulder
• Wheel your hips outside
Here’s a drill to practice this. Extra points for knocking over the guy giving the look!
