Are you in control of your own mind or is your mind the one in control?
If you think you're the one in control try a simple experiment. Look at a clock for one minute without thinking anything. Not even how much time has passed (set an alarm). Think absolutely nothing.
Most people will very quickly come to see that they have no say about the direction their own minds take moment to moment.
You are your mind's servant. Not the other way around. And people spend their whole lives believing they were in command of their faculties.
Then how can one become master of their self in the true sense of the word?
Right now, you see that you *are* your thoughts. To you, there is no distance.
But distance is possible. In fact, the distance can become so immense that no thought arises.
For the first time, you come to see what silence means. You come to see what it means to be a master.
Watchfulness creates, or more accurately, reveals that distance.
When you're sitting and idling, bring your attention to the gaps in your thoughts. Notice the gaps. By and by, those gaps will become larger.
There will come a point where only the gap remains. That is point when you will become awake. That is when, for the first time, you will be the one deciding when to use your mind and how.
