Day 1: Late comer.
I have always been late. And sadly, not fashionably so.
I didn’t grow breasts nor start my period till I was in my first year at the university. In fact, emptying my bag first day in year one- Wande Olumekun (now Awojobi) my friend helping me arrange my locker, asked me if I forgot to buy some. The pads I mean, not the breast. 😁
I didn’t forget, I just didn’t need them.
But I needed the breasts and they blossomed 2nd semester, 😁 now, my boobs are way past Double Ds. Way past!
My mum used to always tell stories of how as a baby, I didn’t walk on time, or talk on time.
I also didn’t start reading on time until I discovered that you can time travel & get lost in books. Pure Magic!
There a lot of things that I didn’t get to on time. A lot!
The most obvious (not certain by whose calendar though), is that I didn’t get married on time, although in retrospect, I firmly believe no one should get married before 33. (Another story, another time.)
I was 40 give or take some months 😊 when I got married, but I married someone that is really into me, ridiculously so, that I still get heart giggles thinking about it. 🥰 and it makes up for all the “lateness.”
So, first of all, introduction,
I am a 40+ recently married perpetual late comer woman, who still can’t drive a car or swim.
Building a business from scratch. (Again!) this time in a new country.
And now that we have established where I am, these stories will make a lot more sense to you.
You see I decided to tell my “why stories” in a series called “Lived forwards, understood backwards” as proof that every decision, every lesson, every action we take has a ripple effect, that impacts on our lives somehow in the future.
When I was 17, I asked my mum to teach me how to drive, she said I should wait for my husband, her own husband taught her how to drive. So I waited. Been waiting Dike 🌚
When I was 8, my cousin Aidelomo referred to someone as “that Idiot that can’t play chess” & although I quickly correct myself, my 40+ year old brain still defines idiots as people that can’t play chess. (I am so sorry non-chess players 🙈).
When I was 4/5, my Dad said “if a fly is buzzing in your ear, it’s asking you to marry it, shout No.”
40+ year old me still shouts “NO!! I will not marry you!!!”
in a crowd. Sigh. 😞
It’s majorly embarrassing. But it’s reflex. Who wants to marry a fly???? Not me!
Now you see, right? How, given my age & my family, these stories are plenty.
It’s Day 1, the stories are going to come. When they come. If they come. No patterns. Just randomness.
That’s me. Random. And my stories. Random.
See you soon with day 2. Hopefully.
My nephew ‘Ruyi sent me a voice note today, it had one sentence, “I love you aunty Ized,” I listened to it & I spiralled,
I was walking to class in 2003/4 when someone told me, “Ized, that girl (pointing at her) is looking for you” & I walked to the girl, she introduced herself as Nnenna, she just got admission, she was supposed to be staying with one of my best friend at the time, but Michelle had traveled 😊, they told her I was Michelle’s bestie and she needed a place to stay, I said Yes!
She ended up staying with me through school & then marrying my brother, and giving me 2 beautiful nieces and one great ‘Ruyi, and so I was thinking, way back - if she didn’t go to Secondary school with Michelle, who told her about our Uni and helped her get admission, if I wasn’t friends with Michelle, if Michelle didn’t travel, would I be getting an “I love you aunty Ized” right now? 🤔
Then I thought of my husband, I thought of football, I thought of how a major disappointment had me leaving my former 🏈team, and then few days later, I get a random call - a guy I never met in my life or taken any note of- it was Kitoye, (now an amazing friend) he invited me to be co- owner of his team, I thought of how that rule at the time, “there must be one female co- owner in every team” was important to this entire ripple, I said yes to Akitoye Ogboye , meetings later, we decided that we needed a defensive captain, I suggested Dike, someone I had known over a year on my former team but never really been close to, I called him, he said an emphatic NO! 3 days later, he said yes, a couple of months later now our defensive captain, he asked if he could stay over at mine on the days our practice ended at 10pm, I lived down the road from the field, I think about all the circumstances that led to me getting that house. I said yes, we started talking a lot in the evenings after practice, he was fascinating.. really truly so 😁
6 months later, we were married. And today, almost 3 years in, I turned over from being snuggled in his chest to write this random note, about how every decision, random as it may be, starts a ripple effect to being right here. right now. right where I am supposed to be. If I wasn’t team owner for Outlaws, would I be Dike’s wife?
Did I know housing Nnenna would lead to this voice note from my nephew 20+ odd years later, No. who woulda thunk?
But here I am snuggled in chest, and listening to VNs from Ruyi.
Life- lived forwards, understood backwards.
“Lived forwards, understood backwards.” sounds like a great name for a series.
A series of stories, on how past experiences, decisions and people shaped the woman that I am, my successes and failures. Let’s do it, I need to tell my “WHY” stories.
You need to read it 😉
Now if ‘Ruyi didn’t send that voice note, would I be …. 😁
I love you too ‘Ruyi. I really do
@TheAjibolaGrey I know a lot of people who dislike fireworks, even my mum complains about it but tbh, I don’t play about fireworks.
That experience at new year celebrations crowns my festive mood
@crazeclown Exactly what I said, everyone’s complaining but no one is talking about the efforts he’s been putting in to show up for the team despite all he’s been through.
Just few years ago, Nwabali was one of the most celebrated players in our National team but now some of those people are calling him “a problem” now
He may not be at his best right now but you can’t throw away the baby with the bath water.
Football fans are quite fickle
Mbok Ben Iko ika ima idomo owo …
I had a conversation with someone today that led to them putting me on to Akwa Ibom indigenous arts & I found this boy’s music in the process & omg?????
I’ve listened to 2 songs so far and I’m hooked by the melody of this Disasta guy
