Hello Nigerians,

I would like to respectfully bring this incident to the attention of the public, relevant authorities, and everyone who may be able to assist.

This incident happened on Sunday, 6th September 2026, at about 4:30–5:00 a.m.

My friend and I were returning from an event we attended on Saturday evening. When we got to the entrance of our street, Lawson Street, Okeira, we were waiting for the security personnel to open the gate when a police van from Pen Cinema Police Division, reportedly headed by the DPO, approached us.

The officers accosted us and asked us to come down from the vehicle. We complied respectfully and without any resistance. They requested the vehicle documents, which we immediately presented.

When we politely asked why we were being stopped and searched at that hour, the DPO allegedly told us:

“You are the ones stealing people’s cars, which they have been complaining about.”

We found this statement extremely serious because it was a direct allegation of car theft against us.

My brother, who was also in the vehicle, explained to the DPO that he is a member of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) and presented his identification card. He also refuted the allegation and asked for clarification regarding the basis for such a serious accusation.

Unfortunately, according to what happened, this resulted in the DPO slapping him and accusing him of challenging his authority.

At no point did we threaten the officers, resist arrest, or become violent. In fact, we cooperated fully and even surrendered ourselves to be taken to the station.

We were subsequently taken to Pen Cinema Police Division, where we were detained, without any formal written statement and as about 9 am the DPO ordered his team and they moved us to Lagos state task force Oshodi which they told them that they don’t they don’t work on Sunday this made the DPO returned us back to the cell for the entire day. We were not given a clear reason for our continued detention, and we were eventually released after ₦100,000 was paid as bail.

I am sharing this not to disrespect the Nigeria Police Force or undermine the work that police officers do. I understand that the police have a responsibility to stop and question people when there are legitimate security concerns, especially in the early hours of the morning.

However, being questioned is one thing; being accused of stealing cars without being shown the basis for such an allegation, physically assaulted for asking questions, detained for hours, and then released after payment of ₦100,000 is another matter entirely.

I am deeply frustrated and disappointed by the way this situation was handled.

If there was information linking us to any crime, we would have been willing to cooperate fully with an investigation. All we expected was to be treated with dignity and given a clear explanation for the accusation and our detention.

I am therefore appealing to the relevant authorities, @PoliceNG @PoliceNG_CRU @LagosPoliceNG @TunjiDisu1 @CspIniedu human rights organisations, and members of the public to look into this incident and help establish justice.

We respect the police. We respect the law. But citizens also deserve to be treated fairly, respectfully, and within the law.

I am making this account publicly because I believe incidents like this should be properly investigated rather than ignored.
