The midlife crisis is not as much linked to age as it is to a particular phase in life. It's that moment when you're either too old to have kids or your kids are old enough to spend time with their friends rather than with you. So you need to ask yourself: What's my next project? Where do I go from here?
Depending on how wisely you can answer (if you ask yourself the question at all...) you may earn the chance for a fresh start in life instead of drifting away from existence.
@marriedmn Then be dumped for a much younger guy as soon as the kids grow up. It's called karma. But don't worry. If you're nice to her, she may not dump you but just cheat you behind your back. Ignorance is bliss ๐ค๐.
@PsychToday They are happier to go. Less strings attached. But this only applies to those who die in their beds. Many die in accidents, driving alone, climbing alone, swimming alone...Maybe that is also a good death if you don't want to end up helpless.
If youโre over 50 or even 40, you might have a hard time getting a new job. Although youโre no less fit, intellectually and physically, than most of your younger colleagues (or the difference is insignificant for the job) and you have a lot more experience (which means you can do things faster and better), you have no advantage, but on the contrary. Most HR recruitment algorithms now blindly exclude candidates just because of their age โ and no human gets to review the process.
When knowledge and experience are less valued than age, there is only one explanation. As you accumulate experience, professional and human, youโre a lot less likely to be fooled, manipulated, or intimidated. You are less prone to swallow blindly corporate culture crap, less willing to be obedient, more likely to think for yourself, have your own views, and adopt a critical attitude. In one word, you are no longer good at being a slave. And no one, really no employer whatsoever is looking for independent individuals and free thinkers. They want people who execute without asking questions. Even in management.
If youโre reading this and think your executive position makes you less vulnerable, donโt get too comfortable. Take a look around. How many of your top-level colleagues are close to retirement age? How many you know who have retired from the same company? You have about the same chance of keeping your current job in the following years.
The rise of AI accelerates this trend exponentially. Beyond the inconvenience and uncertainty, however, there is a big lesson to be learned. For older generations it may be too late to apply it, but younger generations should consider it from the very beginning of their professional life. The lesson is: do not build your career on the idea of being an employee forever. At 40+, you have no place among employees anymore. You should do better than that.
If you are no longer valued as a slave, thatโs not a reason to feel sad and humiliated: itโs just the universe telling you itโs time to be free. Ideally, you should plan everything so that by the time you reach midlife youโre no longer at the mercy of any company, person, or State. By then, you should be the one hiring younger people, instead of being fired because of them. Or you could choose a liberal profession or become a digital nomad. You should be building houses, inventing technology, writing books, giving courses, curing diseases, growing your own food, and anything else that involves leading by example and showing people the way instead of lamenting theyโre taking your job. And if none of these appeal to you, at least invest wisely enough to earn passive income and stay financially covered.
So stop applying for jobs, begging to be made a slave again and again. Stand up for your freedom and start building something that no slave trader could ever take away from you.
@hispanicnomad I don't think they did it without reason. Since the war in Ukraine started, the business of selling passports has boomed. I've seen adds for European passports for a few thousand euros only.
@DCSas In many other languages this is the right way to do it. I would say English may actually be the odd one here. Logically, you don't quote the period. You quote something in the broader context of a phrase that ends with a period.
There is only one antidote to brainwashing. No, it's not IQ. It's not education. And it's definitely not the fact that you have a degree or consider yourself an intellectual.
It's called metacognition.
Nobody talks about it. Nobody measures it. Nobody actively or openly encourages it. It is a threat to any dogma and an obstacle to any form of manipulation. And it's highly inconvenient for all those who love certitude more than truth.
How often do you ask yourself where your thoughts come from and how you came to believe one thing or another? And then how often you reshape and redefine those thoughts and beliefs as a result of this process? That's how you'll know what they're actually worth.
I meant solid biological evidence, not speculative correlations. There is one thing to say that factually/historically/culturally humans are midly polygamous and there is a totally different thing to say this is proven to be determined by their biology. From this point of view the discussion about "biological" polygamy vs monogamy is no different than that about homosexuality vs heterosexuality being biologically and not socio-culturally determined.
@BrianRoemmele This is a common problem I see in AI and IT companies.Everybody wants a "Mr. Data". They believe Mr. Data can do everything. No one understands why a Deanna Troy is needed. Now they realize they should hire a Deanna Troy but they use the same profiling and tools as for Mr Data.
@hispanicnomad It doesn't seem so. That's why you only see the positive comments on top. The critics still don't dare to say much, knowing they might be demoted. That part hasn't changed, I'm afraid. So no reason to party.
