In Delta State, 1,999,112 people were employed in 2023. But 1,565,047 of those employed were self-employed workers, such as Keke riders, market traders, and phone-charging stand operators, while only 434,066 were employees in the government and private sectors.

These numbers show why we must go beyond simply creating jobs. We need to create more formal, stable, and better-paying employment opportunities that allow people to move from survival to sustainable livelihoods.
