We must preserve our sampradāya properly. That is why He (Mahā Periyavā) chose a place during the camp. It took us six months to travel from Kurnool to Kāñcīpuram, which was during Deepavali at that time. There is a place called Pānyam near Kurnool. Mahā Periyavā once climbed 5 kilometers up the hill to the Rāmar temple there, featuring a Gajaprishta Vimāna built under His guidance. When we were there during a Deepavali, He explained what a Maṭham is and its abhiprāyam (aim), मठश् छात्रादिनिलय: (maṭhaś chātrādinilaya:) - Maṭham is a place that spreads jñānā. It is a chātrādinilaya (abode of students) that imparts knowledge on how and how not to conduct ourselves, things we should know, and how to use our jñānendriyās (senses of knowledge) and karmendriyās (senses of action). Maṭham aims to create a society of śiṣyās, vidyārthīs, vādhyārs, people with tattva-jijñāsā, Dharma jijñāsā, Brahma jijñāsā - ज्ञातुम् इच्छा जिज्ञासा (jñātum icchā jijñāsā) - people who have the desire to know about Dharmā and Brahman.
For this purpose, in the Advaita paramparā, they have established many maṭhams. These maṭhams engage in the pracārā of pañcāyatana pūjā, karmānushṭhānas, and the bhakti‑mārga. After one cultivates citta śuddha (purity of mind), they guide them toward ātma‑jñāna and continue the pracārā of the śāstras. Her name was Vijayalakshmi Ramanan.
She was born on February 27, 1924, in Madras. Her father was a World War I veteran and public health official. At 15 years old, she was already an A-Grade artist with All India Radio, performing Carnatic music live on national broadcasts.
She enrolled at Madras Medical College and graduated as its best outgoing student in 1948. She went on to specialise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
In 1955, her husband, a Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force, brought home an application form and encouraged her to apply.
She did.
She was commissioned into the Indian Army Medical Corps and immediately seconded to the Indian Air Force.
There was no uniform for women in the IAF. None had ever served before. She designed one herself: a blue sari in Air Force colours paired with a tan blouse.
That uniform later became the standard issue for every woman officer in the Indian Air Force.
She was the first woman ever commissioned as an officer in the Indian Air Force.
She served through three wars: 1962 against China, 1965 against Pakistan, and 1971 against Pakistan again. She treated injured soldiers and ran military hospitals through all three conflicts.
Her husband died in 1971. She raised her two children alone while continuing her military duties without interruption.
She retired as Wing Commander in 1979. She then set up a private clinic in Bengaluru and treated patients free of charge well into her eighties.
In 1977, she was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service of a high order.
She died on October 18, 2020.
She was 96 years old.
Every woman officer in the Indian Air Force who came after her wore a version of the uniform she designed for herself.

This Kumārasvāmi Hill, also known as Lohachalam, is referred to as the Iron Hill. We have come for darśan here, (29 March 2022). The Kumārasvāmi Hill temple is an ancient temple of Purāṇa prasiddhi. In 1978, our Kanchi Mahā Swāmigal Kanchi Periyavā, came here on pādayātrā. He bathed in the Agastya tīrtham, which is located in front of this temple, and then had darśan here and performed special pūjās. In that year, 1978, Mahā Periyavā stayed in Sandur for an extended period, blessing all the bhaktās here. Near Kumārasvāmi Hill lies Vibūti Hill, which has connections to the Purāṇas. In the years with adhika māsā (an additional lunar month), they collect vibūti from the Kumārasvāmi Hill, bring it to the Ambāl temple there, and distribute it to the bhaktās from time to time. Our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl continues to make every Indian proud.
The successful effort to bring back our sacred heritage plates of the Chola era to India reflects his unwavering commitment to our civilisational roots.
The Nagai (Leiden) Copper Plates are among the most important surviving records of the Chola era, preserving a rare royal charter on 21 copper plates with the seal of Rajendra Chola I.
They record both Tamil and Sanskrit text, offering invaluable evidence of Chola ancestry, administration, and dynastic memory. They also reveal the Cholas’ maritime connections with Sriwijaya and the wider Indian Ocean world, including support for a Buddhist institution at Nagapattinam.
For Tamil Nadu, this is deeply emotional. These are not mere artifacts, but symbols of our rich Tamil culture, history, and spiritual legacy.
On behalf of the people of TN we thank our Hon PM for safeguarding and restoring our heritage for future generations.

Venkatesh: I had the privilege of receiving a small note from the Kanchi Mutt. This has been sent by the Paramacharya during the formation of the Constitution. I will just read it and have it circulated. If such a Constitution is guaranteed as being good for the independent running of religious institutions, it is no small measure due to the initiative of the Kanchi Paramacharya. Originally, the wording was every religious denomination shall have the right. Nobody found any discrepancy in the wording, including the Constitution makers. His Holiness alone felt that this was not enough. No Hindu thinks of himself first as a Hindu. He thinks in terms such as Vaishnavite, Shaivite, Smartha or Saiva Siddhanta. Similarly, no religious institution in India is run under the label of Hinduism. We have Vaishnavas, Saiva Smarthas, Saiva Siddhantas and so on. Therefore, the word religious denomination by itself was not sufficient. It was felt that the wording should be every religious denomination or any section thereof shall have the right. This was ultimately accepted.
This shows that the issue had engaged the attention of the Kanchi Mahaswami as far back as 1948, and that is how Articles 25 and 26 underwent certain changes.
VIDEO | Tamil Nadu: From astronomy to literature, and mathematics to history, ancient Indian texts written on palm leaves are preserved at Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya in Kanchipuram.
The repository, preserved and supported by a digitisation project, makes India's ancient knowledge available to scholars for research and further studies.
Officials say the ancient scriptures have been categorised to make them easily accessible.

Sri Ramana Maharshi died of cancer. His disciples tried to persuade him to go for treatment. He said, ‘Okay. If you like it and if it will make you happy, then treat me. But as far as I am concerned it is okay.’ The doctors were surprised, because his body was suffering, it was in deep pain, but his eyes were without any pain. His body was suffering deeply, but he was not suffering.
The body is part of the karma, it is part of the mechanical circle of cause and effect, but the consciousness can be beyond it, it can transcend it. He was just a witness. He was seeing that the body was suffering, that the body was going to die, but he was a witness. He was not interfering with it, not interfering at all. He was just watching whatsoever was happening, but he was not in the vicious circle, he was not identified, he was not within it then.
Meditation is not an interference. Really, without meditation you are interfering every moment. With meditation you go beyond; you become a watcher on the hill. Deep down in the valley things go on, they continue, but they don’t belong to you. You are just an onlooker. It is as if they are happening to somebody else, or as if they are happening in a dream, or in a film on the screen. You are not interfering. You are just not within the drama itself – you have come out. Now you are not an actor, you have become a spectator. This is the only change.
And when you are just a witness, the body will complete immediately whatsoever, has to be completed. If you have many karmas for suffering, and now that you have become a witness you are not going to be reborn again, the body will have to suffer in this life all the suffering that would have been in many lives. So it happens many times that an enlightened man has to suffer many bodily ills, because now there is no future birth, no future life. This is going to be the last body, so all the karmas and the whole process has to be completed, finished.
