Falana said a few things on Channels TV yesterday. He described petrol subsidy as a scam. He highlighted specific frauds associated with it, such as inflated liters for daily consumption, inflated liters of smuggled subsidised petrol. Absolute bankruptcy of Nigeria's Treasury. Former Customs Boss Hammed Alli's alarm claiming the subsidy is a fraud entirely. fPresident Buhari’s removal of the subsidy. Tinubu’s announcement of Buhari’s decision "Subsidy is Gone". At any rate, even if Tinubu didn't announce it, there is no way he would fund it because Buhari didn't make any provision for subsidy in the 2023 budget. But Falana asked a hypocritical "Where's the Subsidy savings?" Well, as an Economist, a Statistician and a Banker, I will answer this rhetorical question. For a very long time, there was never any subsidy money. We either borrowed to pay for subsidy or ask CBN to print money or do both. By 2021, it has reached a dead end. According to fGovernor Obaseki, FG was printing money monthly to top up allocations to states and LGs, he raised alarm in a press conference and called for immediate removal of petrol subsidy. By 2023, apart from huge consumption debt already acquired which repayment consumes over 90% of its monthly revenue, FG has also printed up to N30trillion through CBN's Ways and Means and the Government now sold Crude Oil in advance but collecting payment immediately, thereby passing the liability to the next generation. That was a dead end! Tinubu’s "Subsidy is gone" is like Nigeria's Economic Oxygen Mask! Although, some shouted hunger, both real and political, however, a patient threatened by a life crushing disease who must be on a strict diet for a time being to reverse the sickness will always think that the doctor is wicked! The greatest leakage blocked by Tinubu is PETROL SUBSIDY. Borrowing for consumption stopped immediately but repayment didn't stop. Printing of money stopped immediately but we must pay back the N30trillion already printed. Many international Airlines have left the country because we couldn't return their money to their country, Tinubu settled the debt and the airlines are back today. Our Nairacard/debit card that was useless internationally in 2023 is now accepted back globally even with increased FX reservations. Global economic ratings are turning positive from the abysmal negative of 2023. State Governments, Local Governments now receive up to triple of their initial allocations. All unpaid outstanding salaries by more than 27 states have been settled. Despite increase in the minimum wage, no state owes salaries again. Pensions are being paid nationwide. Gigantic infrastructures opening businesses in the deserts and coastal parts of the country. Poor Parents can now put their children in universities to acquire tertiary education without having to pay anything including pocket money. SMEs can now register at CAC freely. Our military now receive higher wages and sophisticated equipment to combat terror. Without the removal of subsidy, there's no way FG would be able to meet ASUU demands. Today, ASUU demands are met and industrial strikes are dead! Education now run smoothly. Fertilisers are subsidised for farmers. Nigeria is becoming net exporter of refined crude as investment in the sector gains a boosted confidence. Food prices continue to crash against all odds and wickedness of middlemen. Nigeria needs to keep going like this for another 4 years so that our problems are organically fixed and solved permanently and enduring prosperity becomes our culture.
