I have every reason to be grateful to God. On this day 34 years ago, 10th December 1991, I was called to the largest Bar in Africa, the Nigerian Bar. I enrolled at the Supreme Court as Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. I spent three days traveling to Lagos to be called to the Bar. I did not have the money to use taxi. I boarded a lorry call 911.

It was a lonely ceremony as I had nobody to accompany me on the trip. But God accompanied me. From 1991 till date God has been with me as a lawyer and legal practitioner. In all these years I travelled to almost all parts of Nigeria in the course of my legal practice. God has always blessed me and protected me.

Were there adversities? There were but in all God made me triumphed over all adversities. Within these thirty four years, the lord honoured me and elevated me to the Inner Bar on the 7th of July 2011. God has been kind to me. Given my background stories I am the most unqualified person to be so favoured by God. The stories of my life showed me that greatness is not a function of your background but a function of the grace of God.

The map of our destiny is in the hands of God. Whatever God destined a man to be he will be no matter the man made obstacles. I was never amongst those privileged to be sent to school. I did not start primary school until I was over 17 years. I ran to primary 2 on the 3rd of September 1977. I stopped at Primary 3, to learn motor cycle mechanics.

I finally got opportunity to write my first school leaving certificate examination in 1980 when late Umaru Fonga as Headmaster gave me the opportunity to do so. I did not go to secondary school at all. I wrote my GCE from home. Today I celebrate the hands of God upon my life. The story of my life is a story of from grass to grace. It is a syllabus of from nothing to something.

When God made a man, no man can unmake him. I am made by God and that is why I am whom I am by the grace of God. Happy 34th anniversary of being a lawyer to me. God lifted me far above my enemies. Blessed be the name of the lord. Join me thank God who made me what I am today and who is not done with me yet. Glory be to his name.

Oil & Gas Law in Nigeria isn’t as impossible to enter as people make it sound. Here’s how to actually break in as a lawyer:

1. Master the basics: Start with the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and understand the roles of the NUPRC @NUPRCofficial, the NMDPRA @NMDPRA_Official and the NNPC @nnpclimited. If you know and understand the activities of the regulators, in detail, you already stand out.

2. Take the right courses: You don’t need a master’s degree or a long expensive programme to enter Oil & Gas. What you actually need are strategic, technical certifications that show you understand how the industry works.

3. Join the right networks: The NBA-SBL Energy, Natural Resources and Environment Committee is a good start. You can also check out the Young Professionals Network (YPN) of the Energy Institute, the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), the SPE regulatory sessions, and AIEN. Oil & gas is relationship-driven. Just make sure you show up.

4. Publish short insights: Write about the NUPRC guidelines, gas regulations, licensing rounds, local content compliance etc.

5. Target the firms doing the heavy legal lifting: Seek out law firms and practice groups deeply involved in high-value, high-complexity transactions like Joint Operating Agreements (JOAs), LNG development and off-take contracts, gas supply and pipeline agreements, FPSO procurement and deployment, refinery construction and financing, licensing rounds, regulatory compliance, and full-scale due diligence for major energy or infrastructure deals.

These are the practice seats where young lawyers don’t just observe, they gain technical expertise, learn industry-shaping negotiations, and develop faster than their peers in routine commercial or litigation roles.

6. Add value to mentors: Share summaries, offer research help, engage intelligently. In this sector, competence attracts opportunities.

If you stay consistent for even 6 months, you will break in. Oil & Gas Law rewards those who commit, not those who dabble.

Earlier today, a learned Silk entered the courtroom and started extending courtesy to every lawyer in court, right from the back. Offered handshake, "Good morning, Ma," "Good morning, Sir," to both the young and old in court.

By the time people noticed what he was doing, everybody rose, waiting to extend their greetings to him.

When his matter was called, he continued in that line, extending courtesy to the opposing counsel on the other side and picking his words from the most refined box.

Every lawyer in court looked at him with admiration. Character at the bar cannot be inherited. It is won alone and once won, it shows in both the little and big things. Immediately, I remembered that almost the same time last week, a Silk was in court addressing another lawyer as "this small boy" and calling his argument "moot and mock."

@ChidiOdinkalu The judge allowed himself to be bullied by the petitioner/Counsel. He ought to have stood his ground and resist all pressures to hands off the case. A judge of a superior court embodies courage, candour and should be fair and firm at all times. The NJC should investigate this
