2. The main character's guilt for crimes during the war is the mindset of a modern commoner, not an ancient aristocrat.

Odysseus realizes that they were the barbarians destroying the old world. Although by that time the migration of peoples had ended, and Odysseus's great-great-grandfathers, without the slightest hesitation, exterminated the Greek populations of Mycenaean and Cretan cultures.
