Big week for BYU Sophomore and Walker Cupper Kihei Akina as he makes a start this week on the PGA Tour's Bank of Utah Championship, his fifth career PGA Tour start.
Ping is announcing Akina as their latest NIL ambassador.
โJoining Ping at this point in my career is a tremendous honor,โ Akina, who finished 8th at the 2026 NCAA Championships, said in a press release. โIโve been playing Ping equipment since my junior days, and Iโve developed a great relationship with their team since arriving at BYU."
As part of the deal, Akina will play a full bag of Ping clubs, carry a PING bag and wear a PING hat in all tournaments and appearances outside of his collegiate events.
This is Akina's third PGA Tour start this season, having finished T16 at the Puerto Rico Open and 81st at the Wyndham Championship.
Akina went 1-1-1 at Lahinch last month, halving his Sunday singles match with Niall Sheils Donegan.

Walker Cup: Kihei Akina will be the first Utah high school graduate to play since 1930, when George Von Elm made his last of three appearances. As for BYU golfers, Rick Fehr played in 1983, Mike Brannan & John Fought in 1977. Utah native Preston Summerhays played in 2023.

Kihei Akina, this yearโs NCAA Freshman of the Year, shot 69 today in the opening round of the U.S. Amateur. It came one day after he completed play at the Wyndham Championship.
And it doesnโt even sniff the wildest commute Akina had this year from a TOUR event to an amateur one. Two days after finishing T16 in the Puerto Rico Open, Akina finished up a victory in a 54-hole college event in โฆ San Diego.
Thatโs right. In 48 hours he traveled across the continent, played 54 holes and beat all of his competitors.
BYU's Kihei Akina went straight from the PGA Tour event in North Carolina to the U.S. Amateur in Philadelphia, with a morning tee time today (he's already played 5 holes). State Am champ Bowen Mauss, Steele Dewald, Tyson Shelley and BYU's Drake Harvey are also in the field.

GREENSBORO, N.C. โ BYU menโs golfer Kihei Akina finished his fourth PGA Tour start with a 3-over-par total (67-70-71-75โ283) at the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club on Sunday.
Akina shot rounds of 71 and 75 over the final two rounds to finish 3 over and tie for 81st. The appearance was his fourth on the PGA Tour and his first since the Puerto Rico Open in March.
Akina carded a 1-over 71 in the third round after making the cut Friday. He opened with a bogey on No. 1 before responding with birdies on Nos. 2, 3 and 5. A double bogey on No. 6 brought him back to even par at the turn. After a bogey on No. 11 and a double bogey on No. 12, Akina added birdies on Nos. 13 and 17 to finish the round at 1-over par.
In the final round, Akina made a double bogey on No. 6 before a birdie on No. 7 moved him to 1 over after nine holes. He returned to even par with a birdie on No. 11, but bogeys on Nos. 13, 15 and 16, along with a double bogey on No. 14, dropped him to 5 over.
BYU alumnus Patrick Fishburn finished tied for 49th with a 6-under 72-hole total. He opened the third round with a bogey on No. 1 before making birdies on Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 9. The former Cougar added a bogey on No. 12 after the turn to finish with a 2-under 68.
Fishburn carded an even-par 70 in the final round. He made birdies on Nos. 5 and 10 before a bogey on No. 11 and a double bogey on No. 14 moved him to 1 over for the round. A birdie on the final hole brought him back to even par and 6-under par for the tournament.
Akina will next compete in the 2026 U.S. Amateur Championship alongside incoming freshman Drake Harveyand former teammate Tyson Shelley beginning on Monday at Merion Golf Club and Philadelphia Country Club in Pennsylvania.
