I have had the pleasure to meet great men like him and RADM Dick O'Kane who wrote some excellent books about the WAHOO and TANG.

They had run out of torpedoes. So they took some scuttling charges off the BARB.

Then they created a pressure activated switch. Basically they dug under the railroad track. The switch was activated when the weight of the train rolled over the track that had no ground under it.

The locamotive rolled over the switch and that effectively wrecked the train. The 8 man crew was paddling back to the boat when the charge went off.

Gotta love the bold and aggressive crew of the BARB.

Scottie Scheffler elaborated on the Bryson DeChambeau rule incident from Friday and echoed Harris English’s comments about Bryson always being on TV and camera angles being different to what’s happening:

“No. I've been really focused on the tournament. I think that opens up a greater discussion that -- all I can really say is I think maybe we need to be a little bit more strict in the way that we are policing guys, but it's a little bit of a balance because you've got certain guys like a Bryson who every shot he hits is going to be shown on TV. When you have camera angles that are far away, things can look different than they do when you're right there.

“We've done a good job of -- I don't know, I hate saying stuff out here because I don't want anything to get taken out of context. All I'll say is Bryson, I've known him for a long time, and he's a lot of things, but he's definitely not a cheater. I've never seen him cheat once, whether we were having a putting contest on the putting green or chipping contest, or anytime we played amateur golf, I never saw anything suspicious.

“When you're watching him there from that camera angle, maybe he was a touch careless around his ball, but I don't think he did anything intentionally.

“We've seen penalties happen with -- like you remember Jon Rahm a couple years ago at the Memorial when his ball moved in the rough, and it's like to the naked eye, can you really tell that?

“I think sometimes it's just a difficult position in the game of golf. When I was growing up, if this was the line between things that were -- like if this was the line, here are the rules and this was the right side of it and this is when you're doing things against the rule, you always tried to stray really far that way. I feel like at times, sometimes you see players maybe push it a little bit further than they should.

“I think we need to kind of get back to the traditions of the game and maybe we do need to police things a little bit more stricter in the game.

“But like I said, it's a tough line to kind of cross. So that's why it's hard for me to say anything like this. Bryson is a guy that I've known for a really long time. Like I said, he's not a cheater.”

🕵️ Project boats were born at the height of the Cold War. The US Navy wanted a way to conduct covert intelligence gathering on the ocean floor, & the perfect platform was the first nuclear powered guided missile submarine, USS Halibut (SSGN-587). Designed to launch Regulus cruise missiles, Halibut was left without a mission when the Polaris missile program made Regulus obsolete.
In the mid-1960s, Halibut received extensive modifications at Mare Island Naval Shipyard & was repurposed. She was outfitted with saturation diving equipment pioneered by the SeaLab program, side thrusters to allow hovering, & advanced deep-towed search systems.
Halibut proved the value of seabed espionage by executing missions such as locating sunken Soviet boat K-129 during Operation Sand Dollar & tapping a Soviet underwater communications cable in the Sea of Okhotsk during Operation Ivy Bells.
The US Navy later followed by converting attack boats to carry specialized equipment, lockout chambers, & remotely operated vehicles to tap cables, & gather intelligence. Today, this legacy continues under Submarine Development Squadron 5 out of Bangor.

Project Boats:
★ USS Halibut (SSN-587): The pioneer of the project boats. Converted in 1965, she laid the groundwork for deep-sea cable tapping & seabed intelligence recovery before being decommissioned in 1976.
★ USS Seawolf (SSN-575): The second nuclear-powered boat, she was modified to serve as a special projects boat, performing covert intelligence operations.
★ NR-1: The unique nuclear-powered deep submergence vehicle that was never commissioned. Much smaller than any other nuclear-powered submarine, NR-1 could drive on the ocean floor using wheels & remain submerged for extended periods to map the seabed, retrieve sensitive objects, & conduct covert research.
★ USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687): The Sturgeon-class attack boat was overhauled in the early 1980s & underwent extensive ocean engineering modifications. She was fitted with a distinctive bustle to support tethered antennas & clandestine operations.
★ USS Parche (SSN-683): The famous Sturgeon-class boat that became the premier project boat of the late Cold War. She received major ocean engineering modifications & was later lengthened by 100 feet between 1987 & 1991 to accommodate additional “research & development” gear. Parche is the most highly decorated vessel in US history.
★ Jimmy Carter (SSN-23): The third & last Seawolf-class boat & the current successor to Parche. Unlike earlier project boats that were modified mid-career, Jimmy Carter was constructed with a 100-foot Multi-Mission Platform insert specifically designed for special operations. This unique section allows her to deploy uncrewed underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles, & advanced intelligence-gathering systems.

But this is all just the musings of an Old Submariner because none of this ever happened... we were never there

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners has passed a new ordinance regulating off highway vehicles and low powered scooters on public roads, trails, and county property. Our deputies are currently enforcing this new ordinance. Here’s what you need to know:

What’s prohibited and regulated:
Off highway vehicles (OHVs)
• Includes gas and electric dirt bikes, ATV's, etc.
• Riders under 18 must wear helmets. All riders must follow manufacturer guidelines on the number of allowed riders.
• Parents/guardians may be fined as well if a minor under 18 operates an OHV illegally.

Low-powered scooters
• Definition: Self-propelled vehicles with up to three wheels, ≤50 cc engine or ≤4,476 W motor.
• Must be driven by a licensed individual.
• Vehicle must be registered and insured.
• Riders under 18 must wear helmets.

Penalties & enforcement:
• Off Highway Violations: $250–1,000
• Reckless driving: $500–1,000
• Careless driving: $150–300 (up to $1,000 if it causes injuries or property damage)
• Helmet/safety violations: $75–250
• Eluding deputies: Same ranges as reckless/careless
• Impoundment: Deputies may tow and store illegally operated vehicles; owners pay fees.

***This ordinance does not apply to Class 1, 2, or 3 e‑bikes. It also does not include e‑scooters like Razor‑style scooters.

Norris was awarded the Medal of Honor years after Thornton. In fact it was Thornton who told President Nixon that if he got the Medal of Honor for saving Norris that Tommy Norris deserves it too for what he did months earlier on a separate mission.

29 months later President Ford presented the Medal of Honor to Tommy Norris. Another amazing story by itself.

Note too that Michael Thonton had shrapnel wounds from a grenade. Amazing physical and mental toughness to swim and keep afloat two others that were severely wounded.
