@proudUSmom@end3of6days9@thandar324 She sound heartless and wanted a puppy for her socials. I’m glad the pup was able to immediately come back with you.
We can’t wait to welcome you to the Obama Presidential Center. Tune in now to hear our remarks along with performances by artists and changemakers from around the world who will join us here on the South Side of Chicago. https://t.co/WvFn8i3IKM
3 years ago today, June 18, 2023, was the day the sea otter that became known as Otter 841 became a worldwide otter celebrity and brought me along for a wild ride.
The first photo I took was her catching a wave on the blue surfboard, that’s the photo that appeared on the cover of the New York Times and the Times of London, as well as in dozens of other newspapers. Television news and entertainment shows quickly followed with appearances on CBC news, ABC News, Inside Edition, BBC and countless other news agencies. Scholastic Magazine printed 2 million magazines featuring her in multiple languages that went to 2nd graders in schools across the country. Scholastic Books did a book on her that became popular in school book sales.
With the fame, came the crowds. I’ll never forget the warm Saturday afternoon in June when people were lined up shoulder to shoulder along West Cliff Drive from the tip of Lighthouse Point to well past the surfer statue with everyone hoping for a glimpse of her.
Fish and Wildlife made many attempts to capture her, utilizing boats, cages, nets and even decoy surfboards to lure her towards them. The most outrageous attempt used multiple boats and the assistance of the Coast Guard to string a giant net from the Wharf to West Cliff. 841 outsmarted them every single time!
In October 2023, I noticed she was getting bigger and publicly wondered if she was pregnant, a week later she had a new born pup with with her and they became 841+1. Halloween 2023 was the year of 841 costumes with dozens of them spotted during downtown Halloween festivities.
In December 2023, her and the pup appeared to leave the area, with no sightings until early summer of 2024 when she was again spotted at Steamer Lane, a couple of times. Last year, I was told by authorities that they suspect she’d chewed off her blue ID tag that also contained a tracking device, which means she was no longer easily identifiable.
I still think of 841 frequently and hope she’s living her best possible life as a wild sea otter. 💙
All photos here were taken on 06/18/2023.
But the Obama Presidential Center is not just about commemorating the work we did together. It’s about inspiring the next generation to make their mark, too. Thank you for everything you did for us, and everything you’re still doing to leave this world better than you found it.
It was great reconnecting with our alumni tonight!
Michelle and I will always be grateful for the chance to work side-by-side with so many brilliant, selfless people who believed in something bigger than themselves.
Someone asked whether I take the photos myself or use others' images. 😁😬
My answer: I never abandoned botany — not even during the war, not even under bombardment. Every single photo you see here is mine. 😅

Amazingly, this is a genuine colour portrait of General Custer's Crow scout, Mahr-Itah-Thee-Dah-Ka-Roosh, who fought in the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. He was also known as "White Man Runs Him" and "White Buffalo That Turns Around". I have cleaned & enhanced this incredible Autochrome by Edwin L. Wisherd, taken in the Crow Indian Reservation of Montana between 1926-7. It is an early colour glass-plate process and not colourised.
This is Penny. She found the perfect stick today and is determined to retrieve it. Hasn’t moved an inch so far, but her human didn't raise a quitter. 13/10
She calls her place “Casa de LA Broke Ass” and honestly… the name is doing a lot of heavy lifting 😂
Michelle gives us the full outside tour of her tiny “sardine can” that somehow holds five dogs, a donkey she straight-up stole from her vet (and renamed Donna), and a bunch of horses who have a personal vendetta against her sunflowers. One dog was found in a garbage can and likes rocks. The septic system is in the driveway. And she washes her “ass” at the wash rack.
She got fired for making TikTok videos at work… so she just made more. And now here we are.
This is the most unhinged and adorable animal tour I’ve seen in a while.
Could you survive a week at Casa de LA Broke Ass?
Incrível a conversa da Cisne Negro com sua dona.
Ouça só, ela pronuncia diversos sons, mostrando seus 5 possíveis filhotinhos. Que orgulho ela está e feliz em mostrar.
