Now that the most conservative Supreme Court since the 1960s has confirmed that racism is alive and well, we need Congress to act to protect our rights. The first step? Passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. My latest piece in @Newsweek. @ACLU

"Black voters must be heard in the electoral process, not packed into one district or diluted into several districts by maps that attack their political power," says @Alanah_ACLU.

@ACLUofLouisiana@Newsweek The Supreme Court has affirmed the right of Black voters in Alabama to elect a second congressional candidate of their choice! This is a stunning victory. And it makes clear that the Voting Rights Act is still necessary! On to Louisiana!

We are about to get some major rulings from the Supreme Court, and I wrote in @Newsweek about how the Roberts Court chooses power over people, every time. I don’t expect this time to be any different. @ACLUofLouisiana@ACLU

The failures of Louisiana’s new redistricting maps are particularly concerning because of the population growth and shifts in the state over the last 10 years.

#BREAKING: Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards has vetoed the state’s new congressional map, which included only one majority Black district despite Census data that show the state’s Black population has increased to 33% since 2010. https://t.co/CmnEn3XW02
BREAKING: In a 6-3 vote, the LA Senate & Governmental Affairs Committee just approved state Senate & Congressional maps that will likely violate the Voting Rights Act. We strongly urge the legislature to adopt a Senate map that won't undermine the political power of Black voters!
This week @ACLUofLouisiana issued a follow up letter to @TheJusticeDept requesting a pattern or practice investigation into the state police’s history of targeted violence and misconduct toward communities of color which is currently under review.
"AP identified at least a dozen cases over the past decade in which Louisiana State Police troopers or their bosses ignored or concealed evidence of beatings, deflected blame and impeded efforts to root out misconduct."

@orleansparishda Wow this is incredible! In this case, justice delayed was only justice partially denied. DA Williams should be commended for his courage. Moreover, Mr. Jones should be heralded for his valor and for serving as a perfector of the criminal legal system!
