Celebrate Bears of Alaska at Bearfest, July 25-29, 2012. Symposium, workshops, music, bearviewing at Anan Wildlife Observatory in the Tongass National Forest
Alaskan brown #bears eat up to 90 pounds of food a day. #Salmon are a critical part of the bear’s diet; a salmon can pack 4,000 calories. They are abundant in summer as they swim up rivers to lay eggs. This young bear in #Hyder enjoys a snack of salmon eggs. #wildlifewednesday
Does #Bear Spray Work?
This is a question of great importance here in #Alaska
The science is clear, right? Not so fast, according to, well, science.

Took time to track down the cute City Hall in Wrangell, Alaska for a #CityHallSelfie while we were visiting last week.
This is a great town! Thank you @WrangellCVB for the very fun @AlaskaBearfest and exceptional hospitality.
Hi! Science presentations vary each year at Alaska Bearfest. A symposium is held over 2 nights and each year different topics and researchers. We have had genetics, populations, habitat issues and this year was management of bear populations and public bear viewing sites.
We talked through recreation & tourism in Southeast, outfitter guide permitting, needed safety improvements at the site, and future replacement of the observatory deck. (We even had a surprise visitor: a black bear!)
Visitors may request the last of the daily permits for the #Anan Wildlife Observatory this summer. There are four permits per day for the remainder of the summer. These permits need to be requested in person at the #Wrangell Ranger District. https://t.co/Ryyw8F0p88 #Tongass
As bears begin to awaken from their winter sleep, it's a good time to freshen up on your Bear Aware skills especially when heading out on your National Forest. Learn more here: https://t.co/PmimtQqFZz
