Multimorbidity is the coexistence of two or more long-term conditions and is a growing problem globally, projected to affect two-thirds of 65-year-olds in the next decade. #multimorbidity serves a clinical marker for accelerated ageing, frailty and mortality.
In addition to genetic linkages, underlying mechanisms could include shared pathophysiology, such as #atherosclerosis, as a likely shared risk factor for cardiovascular 🫀 diseases such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure.
Causal mechanisms may also include one non-communicable condition acting as a risk factor for a second one, such as #obesity increasing the risk of osteoarthritis due to increased mechanical stress on weight-bearing joints.

Delighted to share that our systematic review on prediction models using longitudinal EHR data has just been published in @AMIAinformatics

So happy to share our new work, recently published in @jmirpub!
If you are interested in multimorbidity patterns and work with older populations, be sure to look at how these patterns change when frailty is also considered in the equation.
