Prof. Celeste Saulo, director of @SMN_Argentina, has been appointed as WMO Secretary-General. She will take office on 1 January 2024. She is the first woman to hold the position.
She won the requisite 2/3 majority of votes at #MeteoWorld
New #StateofClimate update from WMO and @MetOffice:
66% chance that annual global surface temperature will temporarily exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one of next 5 years
98% likelihood that at least one of next five years will be warmest on
record.
SOFF is helping @WMO to build a truly global observing network for weather and climate reanalysis, filling persistent geographic gaps in observations, giving benefit to all for early warning of hazards. #EW4ALL
WMO’s Executive Council has endorsed UN #EarlyWarningsForAll initiative as a top priority.
We will work with partners to try to ensure that everyone is protected by life-saving early warnings in the next 5 years.

WMO's Executive Council has endorsed a planned new Global Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Infrastructure combining satellite and surface observations to support #ClimateAction to reduce record levels of heat-trapping gases like CO2

Amazing animation of a year of weather! See the daily beat of tropical convection, tropical cyclones, mid-latitude storms & the seasonal shift in monsoons. Satellite obs, coordinated through #CGMS, are a key piece of the @WMO Integrated Observing System #WIGOS
ICYMI, you can now watch a whole year of #weather and witness the major storms to hit the globe in 2022. Thanks to the international cooperation with our partners, we're able to get a full view of the entire planet from #space 🛰️🌍

The Systematic Observations Financing Facility #SOFF signs agreements with peer advisors, who are twinning with beneficiary countries to improve the flow of data for Numerical Weather Prediction #NWP, during the ongoing 76th @WMO Executive Council. #EarlyWarningsforAll
[JOB OFFER] 📄
We are looking for a Chief of Section (Ocean Observations and Services) to lead, coordinate and organize the activities of the GOOS Office.
📅 Deadline: 20 January 2023
Apply here 👉 https://t.co/5M36UPeSAG
Thank you, David Obura @dobura, for the strong call out for sustained ocean observations and the need to link these to #biodiversity indicators.
@IocUnesco and GOOS are dedicated to support the delivery of ocean information needed in this process. #COP15
🚨🌍 Global Carbon Budget 2022, out now!🌍🚨
It provides the latest update on how we humans have tampered with Earth's remarkable system of #carbon stocks and flows.
So what are the take-homes from our latest update?
@gcarbonproject@PFriedling
@O_Fish_Man@1AbbyBenson@IocUnesco@GOOSocean Indeed, and that goes for all #OceanObs, physical, biogeochemical, and biological! Compared to the other parts of the Earth System (in context of climate observations #COP27) the ocean has small space scales, many timescales, and most deep #EOVs invisible from space.
#COP27#EarthInfoDay@IocUnesco Vladimir Ryabinin: we have a big gap in #OceanObs to understand the impact of climate on ocean ecosystem services. @GOOSocean estimates only 7% of the ocean has sustained biological and ecosystems obs. The financing of all #OceanObs is fragile.
Our vision to build the global ocean observing system is a bold, urgent, and achievable step that we can take to mitigate and adapt to #ClimateChange.
Thank you everyone who joined GOOS and @POGO_Ocean at our #COP27 side event today!
@WrdAppltns @DavidGJOHNS1 @SeascapeScience@IocUnesco@GOOSocean Thanks @WrdAppltns for chiming in and pointing to the GOOS BioEco metadata portal, a great improvement on figures fixed in time. The original is from the paper linked below, and we're looking into why the N. Atlantic CPR does not appear in the figure. https://t.co/jcl4khxFMo
#COP27#EarthInfoDay moderators Lars Peter Riishojgaard & @anyawaite wrap up: Good observations can mobilize strong #climateaction. A global goal on obs
can help ensure adequate coverage & improve the fragility of the system, especially those parts that remain research-funded.
