The biggest obstacle to success is sometimes the need to be certain that you’ve made the best possible choice.
You think.
You compare.
You optimize.
You rethink the plan.
Then you rethink the plan you just rethought.
And you spend three weeks trying to optimize a decision for which you have absolutely no data.
This is particularly dangerous when you’re intelligent.
Because your brain is capable of producing an infinite number of perfectly rational reasons not to act.
In those moments, I have one rule:
I call on my Cro-Magnon brain.
I take the first idea I thought was good enough.
And I execute it.
Not because I know it’s good.
Because I know I won’t know until I test it.
I’d rather have a mediocre decision + 7 days of real-world data than a theoretically perfect decision + 3 weeks of thinking.
Because between what I imagine and what reality shows me, I’ll always choose reality.
I don’t care if it looks bad.
I don’t care if it sounds stupid.
If it works, it ain’t stupid.
Action isn’t just execution.
Action is a test.
The test produces data.
The data tells you what to change.
And the changes move you closer to something that works.
While some people are trying to find the right answer before they start, you can simply start and let reality teach you the answer.
It’s much faster.
And much harder to bullshit.
