Rudyard Kipling kind of said it: success and failure are both impostors. England and Spain were separated by a penalty shootout in the #WEURO2025. A coin toss, not much more. It could easily have gone the other way. And yet, in football—as in life—the winners are celebrated, and the losers are left asking questions.

But I’d like to ask something about England. Some will see this as sour grapes. Others, I hope, will understand the spirit of this question. Why, with the quality that England have, do they often choose to play the way they do? Often, it’s a coin in the air. During extra time, with a full 30 minutes to play, England appeared to be playing for penalties—time-wasting included (which, by the way, I have no problem with; it’s clever, pragmatic). But is that all there is?

England are so good, their players have got so much experience and can dominate different phases of play, so much so that they could control matches, impose their rhythm, and win without needing miracles. And yet, the choice is often different—and frankly, surprising.

Spain’s team—like the top club sides—play with a clear, coherent idea. Midfielders arrive in the box, circulate the ball with calmness, wait in position, switch play, have got penetration. The ball is rarely lost needlessly. When the moment comes to decide the play, individual quality rises to the surface. The concept is consistent: always looking for the same collective idea. Certainly they were not good enough against England, but deserved more before the penalties. They need to be more effective, but the collective concept guarantees consistency in the long term.

England, by contrast, often look like they’re reacting rather than constructing. When they win the ball back, they do try to attack—but each time in a different way. That suggests a lack of a clear, shared idea. It’s difficult to identify a constant. But they have such a strong mentality than they have started a golden era for the national team… despite living on the edge.

Why even raise this?

How dare I criticise the winners, especially when Spain lost?

Because I want to talk football—beyond headlines, beyond euphoria. Especially when the line between winning and losing was so razor-thin.
