Hyped about Tezos? So is my Makinomo #8!
@PixelSushiRobot managed to sneak a playable Katamari-style game into his first generative collection on @AleatoryArt.
Just minted my first generative collection on @AleatoryArt
Meet "Makimono": part PFP, part animation, with a game mode hiding inside.

Boundaries? Oh you mean stuff we haven't fixed yet! Why, you got an idea? GIF downloads... yeah! Let's make that work!
Makimono now generating little animated sushi buddies on Aleatory.

Tried making generative art that looks like a computer crashing. now my actual PC is joining the performance. 500 seeds, one laptop fighting for its life 😭

🌉Cycle Bridge is live on @AleatoryArt .
Someone surveyed a crossing and did not come back. The lamps are still lit. The name on the sheet is not on any map.

Excellent explanation. And this lays out a big complaint I have with Tezos structure in general in how the FA2 standards (and general acceptance) defines how the final images work. The metadata JSON is how any marketplace/indexer/normal observer will look to find the art. They will look at the standard metadata traits and use the URI's to find the artwork and thumbnails. This is what I do. This is what @My_3y3's tool does. Looks at the standard fields to find the information because without knowing otherwise, there is no reason to look elsewhere.
In EVM/solidity/ERC721, the output metadata (JSON of traits and image plus whatever else) can be generated on fly. A gas-light tokenUri() operation can generate a 10 MB artwork plus a separate preview plus all the traits. Code can create everything onchain, much like Aleatory is doing. But unlike Tezos FA2, this is actually the final authority based on the ERC721 standard. A contract does not need to publish anything extra as a workaround.
Unfortunately, with Tezos FA2 the metadata JSON is expected to be a fixed URI in bigmap storage (not generated on the fly) which means either off-chain link or datauri string. This fixed storage is looked at as the standard's final authority. The former creates non-future-proof dependencies and the latter creates unnecessarily expensive (potentially impractical) storage requirements. It is quite nonsensical.
And honestly, it is a shame to HAVE to create off-chain dependencies so that marketplaces/indexers can read the artwork and traits for display. We are supposed to be using modern technology here with the blockchain, yet the old mentality still keeps its grip. Because some people decided one thing like this, we are stuck doing it out own way and degrading output for the marketplaces, or we are stuck degrading our way.
Aleatory chooses the better of the two, but it shouldn't have to make that concession. The FA2 standard gets in the way. It should be fixed so not only a current consensus can be used for generative artwork, but also so that future marketplaces, indexers, galleries have the instructions after we are long gone.
I love this! I'm building something around onchain events, platform and community activity, and @AleatoryArt keeps popping up everywhere I look or click.
How would anyone know how our system works? This is a challenge @JestemZero poignantly posed to us while discussing the finer points of what constitutes fully on chain. It rung true.
So we prepared a breakdown of what is and is not on chain, and why.
