Yeah, in older days we were following the sun, having a house lit up during night time was a luxury.
Then we got cheap lights and screens, and this started messing up with our sleeping mechanism used to work for centuries.
I think 9-5 40 hours a week is actually something the communism achieved, since the Europe in the beginning of XX century had 50 or even 60 hours working week (for instance, coal miners in England) - and during the wake of communism Europe had to lower the number of working hours so workers do not turn red :D
> Your typical commit carries 8.7× more code than two years ago, and your typical working day lands 5.1× more lines — at exactly the same cadence.
AI era, what can you say
@TreePengui7687@mushycrouton@LeePheonix360 All Samanhthas I’ve met were obviously identifiable as female. Oh wait, the same with the Sam guy above - nobody ever will think that this Sam is “Samantha”, so why need in pronouns?
@mikeoniron Have been practicing it for over an year, had any problems with hunger feeling only first couple of days
Better sleep, clearer mind in the morning, all good so far!
@WokenMindIsGold@yourspingu The ranking algorithms brought social networks to shit - the more controversial and dumb stuff you post, more engagement and money you get
AI definitely improved my reading experience, especially history books and books on other cultures - you can always look up something while staying in context, so the experience is much deeper
@gabaidulin@SwedPaul «Скорее всего идет» - есть данные? Понятно что это коснется всех, но возможно одни успеют стать меньшинством, а там и весь мир вернется в каменный век что вернет рождаемость
Engineers, the worst thing you can do in this business climate - believe in “we are family” bullshit. No equity - no extra involvement. Value your time and life, please!
@powerbottomdad1 Marketing matters. You do not need to have the best product if you can market and distribute your stuff on such level (no disrespect to America movies industry for sure)
I only have a couple of pages of The Odyssey left, and my main takeaway is this: Nolan’s Odyssey is further removed from Homer’s Odyssey than John Wick is. John Wick is a modern-day Odysseus.
For me, movies are half visuals, actors, and plot, and half ideas — “what the author was trying to say.” Nolan is phenomenal visually and as a director (there are some issues with questionable casting choices, but never mind that), but the other half of his Odyssey consists of a “new” interpretation of Odysseus’ experience: has he himself become a “man of the sea”? Has he become the very dragon he set out to slay by massacring the suitors? Introspection, reflection, emotional turmoil, PTSD.
In Homer, all the slaughter and rivers of blood are about restoring order after the chaos created by the suitors. The gods favor Odysseus and actively help him. Not an ounce of soul-searching, no “Am I doing the right thing?”, no regret — just cold steel, blood, and justice.
John Wick has essentially the same moral logic: it doesn’t matter that rivers of blood are being spilled; the only objective is to restore order. After all, they killed his dog and stole his car. Amusingly enough, the “gods” are on John’s side too — just think of the manager of the local Continental.
Introspection, reflection, and respect for other people’s feelings and rights work well when practiced internally, within a society that shares those values. But when they become a vulnerability in the face of uncompromising barbarians, perhaps it is time to return to the good old precepts of Homer.
