Queen Elizabeth II had two "secret" cousins with severe disabilities who were hidden from the public. Nerissa and Katherine Bowes-Lyon were the daughters of John Herbery Bowes-Lyon and his wife, Fenella. John was the brother of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, making the two daughters first cousins of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, sharing one pair of grandparents. Nerissa was born in 1919, and Katherine was born in 1926.

Both girls were born with severe learning and intellectual disabilities. In 1963, a magazine called Burke's Peerage claimed that Nerissa had passed in 1940 and that Katherine had passed in 1961. However, in 1987, it was revealed that Katherine was still alive and that Nerissa had died in 1986, bringing their story into the mainstream focus.

Neither sister learned to talk, and they resided in the Earlwood Hospital. Nurses at the hospital mentioned that the sisters never received gifts, Christmas or birthday cards, money, nor were they visited by any members of the Royal Family. This was particularly shocking considering their aunt, the Queen Mother, was a patron for a charity supporting people with learning difficulties.

Nerissa's grave was initially marked only with a plastic tag and serial number. She received a proper headstone only when her identity became public. No member of the Royal Family attended her funeral. Similarly, Katherine passed away in 2014, and it is believed that no Royal Family member attended her funeral either.
