We’ve become un-enlightened.
Cut off from Earth and Sun, modern humans live under artificial light with zero magnetic connection. That single shift altered our charge density, dulled our minds, and made us blind to the very forces that regenerate us.

I’m a pro-sun dermatologist because sun is good for you.

But tanning beds are bad.

Teens don’t know the difference and it’s causing melanoma.

And it’s dermatology’s fault.

The AP just ran a piece about how much tanning teens are doing. It calls the idea that a base tan prevents sunburn a myth.

A base tan DOES prevent sunburn. That’s obvious.

If it wasn’t true you’d burn just as easily at the end of the summer as at the beginning. Do you?

But a base tan FROM A TANNING BED doesn’t work.

The UV light in a tanning bed is different from natural sun, and a tan from it doesn’t protect you from burns like a tan from the sun does.

And no evidence links non-burning sun exposure to dying from melanoma, but lots of evidence links it to living longer and being healthier.

So dermatology needs to teach teens that. If you want a tan, get it from the sun, just never get a sunburn.

Is it ideal? Probably not.

Enough sun to get a ‘good’ tan is probably more than you need to get the health benefits, and enough to increase your risk of non-melanoma skin cancer and wrinkles.

But as long as you don’t get a burn, enough sun to get a tan doesn’t increase your risk of dying from melanoma.

Teens are smart enough to understand that.

They’re also smart enough to know that “A base tan is a myth” is a lie.
