It is effectively impossible to conduct a rational debate with Islamists (and their right-wing allies) on questions of Islamic state. Ronnie is correct in his logical analysis. Yet he will never persuade the the right-wing forces. The reason is structural.
Ronnie starts from historical facts, present reality, constitutional text, and democratic norms. His opponents operate from a closed, pseudo-theocratic framework whose first premise is non-negotiable: Malaysia is a Malay-Sunni Islamic state because the majority of the population is Sunni Muslim, and that is the will of the majority. Everything else; history, the Federal Constitution’s actual wording, the rights of non-Muslims, the multi-religious character of the society; is secondary and must be subordinated to that axiom.
What looks like a debate on paper is therefore not a debate at all. It is a form of baiting. The Islamist side enters the exchange not to test or refine its claims against counter-evidence, but to force the opponent into a defensive posture while reaffirming its own unfalsifiable starting point. Concessions are never reciprocal. Logical inconsistencies are dismissed as irrelevant or as evidence of the opponent’s “anti-Islamic” hostility. The goal is not mutual understanding or the discovery of truth; it is the public reinforcement of the claim that the Islamic character of the state is both democratic destiny and divine right.
So Ronnie has fallen into their trap big time!
This is precisely why these same right-wing actors systematically refuse genuine theological or philosophical debate with scholars from other religious traditions (or even with reformist Muslims) on the question of whether Malaysia ought to be an Islamic state.
Such an exchange would require them to treat their preferred outcome as one possible arrangement among others, open to scrutiny. Their method precludes that. The majority’s numerical strength plus the asserted religious identity of that majority is presented as both sufficient and final. In their view, this is simply “how democracy works.”
Consequently, civil and open debate on this issue has become impossible. Those, like Ronnie and so many others, who continue to engage these forces on the assumption that more facts, clearer logic, or better historical reminders will eventually prevail are falling into a trap.

It was reported in NST that the govt requested an indicative price for the possible acquisition of Datasonic Technologies Sdn Bhd (DTSB), and NexG responded with RM7.5 billion.This is NexG’s own preliminary internal assessment-not an independent valuation, agreed price or govt offer.

The RM7.5 billion figure is more than seven times NexG’s own RM1.04 billion market capitalisation. DTSB’s active Malaysian govt contracts total approximately RM2.74 billion, but contract value is revenue spread over several years-not profit or company value. Its clearly reported overseas e-passport contract is only about RM20 million.

More importantly, IRIS Corporation Berhad-not Datasonic-pioneered Malaysia’s world-first electronic passport in 1998 and helped develop and implement MyKad in 2001. Datasonic participated in the original MyKad consortium through Dibena and later became the principal supplier, but it did not originate these systems alone.

IRIS still possesses e-passport, biometric ID, smart-card manufacturing and border-control capabilities, yet its entire market capitalisation is only around RM188 million. RM7.5 billion is almost 40 times that value.

NexG also cites RM1.9 billion in "committed investments," but the public has not been shown how much was actually spent, remains payable, was funded through govt contracts or represents independently valued assets. Its patent-pending QR technology is not yet a granted patent, while SALUR and its proposed SuperApp do not appear to have an established commercial earnings record.

Why should taxpayers buy one contractor at such an enormous premium without first comparing the cost of acquiring or partnering with IRIS, purchasing only DTSB’s essential assets and intellectual property, or establishing a govt-owned sovereign identity platform through competitive procurement?

If acquiring private contractors becomes govt policy, will HeiTech Padu and Bestinet-other private companies involved in critical govt and immigration systems-be next?

This is Malaysia’s recurring problem- we privatise critical public infrastructure, become dependent on selected contractors, award them billions in govt contracts, and then consider buying back the same capability at a massive premium.

Before one ringgit is committed, the govt must disclose who proposed this acquisition, why it is necessary, how the existing RM2.74 billion contracts will be treated, and appoint independent financial, technical, cybersecurity and intellectual-property valuers. National security cannot become a convenient justification for an inflated acquisition or corporate bailout.

The RCI found that TH’s declared RM3.4 billion profit should have been a RM1.4 billion loss-a RM4.8 billion difference. The govt later absorbed RM10.2 billion through Urusharta Jamaah, while TH recorded another RM2.6 billion in impairments. Seven of 14 troubled investments reportedly suffered total losses. In my personal view, if Tok Guru Nik Abdul Aziz were still around, he would have given you a severe dressing-down for issuing such a statement. He understood that defending Islam means defending truth and amanah-not using Islam to defend wrongdoing.
