If BC keeps hammering this wedge, we could deliver on supply, affordability & climate targets🎯
These suite @LeckieStudio & @BCollective_CH designs enable onsite or offsite construction. Offsite addresses the #1 supply constraint: workforce. Keep hammering this wedge BC ◹🔨🏗️
We all want to live in beautiful, vibrant, healthy communities.
Today, I released a catalog of set house designs - available for free - that allow people to build attainable housing in a more efficient and cost effective way than ever before.

Does housing matter if we decimate our climate? Thanks @CityofPoMo 4 recognizing both https://t.co/yT1qyUk02F
🎯BC needs an onsite rain capture & retention target to reduce Xtreme heat death, local flooding, stormwater co$t.
🌳🌧️Trees #1. Rain gardens, green roofs/walls...
@DanWoy 🩷 that as he smiles with his bike in hand "the best vehicles I've driven in the winter." Whitehorse bike/walk mode share is higher than national average.
@MichaelSchwandt The be$t cooling approach in MOST S&W exposures on Coast is exterior shades that go down when 🌞 hits combined w a fan to blow cool air in when shades are up & 🌞 down. Can reduce indoor temp 10C in extreme heat. AND manage surging power demand, a potential health catastrophe.
@__cosmopolite__ 100% . Non-market 🏡 depends on private construction sector. To deliver supply & manage workforce constraints, offsite manufacturing is essential. It will be private. SOME private sector developers drive innovation. Need private/public AND social sector collaboration.
BC Builds can be coupled with a strategy to build a pipeline for offsite construction projects to solve the TOP constraint: labour force. Offsite construction can reduce workforce requirements 50%, schedules 30% & cost 20%.
Without offsite🏗️, our crisis will worsen🙄
Good start harnessing taxpayer land! There are >4000 public parcels in BC: muni, prov, fed, hospital, K-12, uni, park&ride.. >600 have developable land (mostly🅿️ lots) and in good locations for >50,000 non-market units.
This won't solve 🏡crisis but can. 👀sweet solution 🍬💡👇
Today, we launched #BCBuilds 🙌🏾
Gone are the days where government sells off public lands - we are going to use our public land - to build affordable housing for middle income British Columbian families! 🏡

The private sector has failed to build homes people can afford. Today we launch BC Builds — to get more lower-cost middle-income homes built faster so that people can find a place to live in the communities they know and love.

@KeaGru@CityofVancouver@UBC@BC_Government Chart 1 compares global economy-wide productivity (grey 3%), construction (red 1%), manufacturing (green 3.5%) over time. Chart 2 shows projection of Canadian construction productivity is negative. Contrast w manufacturing is instructive. Yes automation/manufacturing is critical.
TOP constraint on housing supply is NOT naughty munis. Construction labour force is flatlining while pop surges. #OffsiteConstruction is an ACE card.🙏to nimble n nice #HousingCentral crowd & co-panel Dan Garrison @CityofVancouver Michael White @UBC Lisa Helps @BC_Government
@bretoncrellin More than 60% of households are 1 + 2 person. Plexifying a large single family into three 1000 foot units works well for many. Yes: TOTAL rent for 3 plexes will be more, but each plex will be less expensive than 1 SF. AND this is inadequate to address affordability & supply.
Medals 4 integrating #AffordableHousing on public land🏅@CityofVancouver housing in firehall, library, school 🏅@UBC 600 beds atop one of N America's busiest bus exchanges. Underutilized public land near jobs can create 10s of 1000s of #Coop#nonprofit & #Indigenous housing units
Big smiles and insightful discussion today at the #HousingCentral panel moderated by the Premier’s special advisor #LisaHelps and featuring consultant Alex Boston, Michael White (@UBC) and Dan Garrison (@CityofVancouver) on optimizing the use of public land for affordable housing development. I learned about the big future for prefabricated “offsite” housing construction.
