Yesterday, I had the privilege of delivering the opening remarks at the Regional Food Systems Summit in Lilongwe, a critical platform for addressing food security challenges across Eastern and Southern Africa.
Hosting this summit in Malawi underscores the international recognition of President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s transformative efforts to advance agriculture, with countries and development partners acknowledging our nation’s leadership in this vital sector.
The region faces a dire food security crisis, with over 120 million people requiring emergency food aid in 2024—a sharp rise from just eight years ago. Climate shocks, such as Cyclone Freddy’s devastation in 2023, which impacted 2.5 million Malawians, and subsequent droughts affecting 5.7 million, highlight the urgent need for systemic change.
Malawi is responding with bold reforms. We are modernizing the sectorr through private sector partnerships and improved targeting of smallholder farmers. Digital innovations, digital farmer registry, enhanced service delivery, and expanded soil testing, are all ways that promotes climate-smart agriculture.
Comprehensive policy updates to the Extension Strategy, National Livestock Development Policy, Fertilizer Policy, and Seed Act are driving modernization.
The $371 million Malawi Food Systems Resilience Project (AGCOM 2), supported by the World Bank, EU, Ireland, Norway, and Flanders, is a cornerstone of our strategy. It includes a $20 million grant for policy reforms, significant investments in climate adaptation, and initiatives to strengthen agricultural value chains and market access.
Recognizing that food systems transcend borders, Malawi is aligning with SADC and COMESA frameworks and leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area to boost regional food trade. Through the Food Systems Resilience Program, we are collaborating with neighboring countries to develop scalable, resilient solutions.
This summit is a call to collective action, demanding solutions that are evidence-based, regionally scalable, fiscally and environmentally sustainable, and inclusive of smallholder farmers. I am eager for the robust discussions and firm commitments that will emerge, ensuring our food systems nourish our people today while securing sustainability for future generations.
The event is taking place at Bingu International Conference Center and will run up to Friday, May 23 2025
