@matthew_luckow Is it a paint-on matte or a spray? You have to shake them really well either way. I've not used paint-on varnish, but for spray finishes, make sure you're doing light coats with the can about a foot from the minis, and do several coats.

Just finished my warlock for new d&d game, servant of Dao genie. Weapons overrated when you can eldritch blast everything. Shading on face&cloak&familiar is done with layers of washes and then going back over w base color.

@matthew_luckow But the other thing is to learn to embrace washes. I know you said it made the figures look dirty, but you use the contours of the figure and surface tension do the work for you, to get the depth, then go over the highlights with the base color again.

For smaller figures, hand stability helps - you want to minimize the natural unsteadiness in our bodies - so what I do is brace my elbows on the table, and brace my wrists against each other, so the only movement is fingers
