@KuperSimon In the same way that Suggs (Graham McPherson) amd Chas Smash @CathalSmyth changed their names - as being Scottish/Irish meant you got picked on by both sides of your identity. You can’t win
A moment of applause will take place before today's Denmark-England and Spain-Italy EURO 2024 matches in honour of former UEFA general secretary Gerhard Aigner, who has passed away aged 80.
@ChrisLepetit@FrancisAwartefe@Ant1Duval Agreed. Hopefully it won’t happen, but need to plan - no-one in football thought about or planned for life post-Bosman. BTW the *R*STP already *is* a form of global regulation of the economics of pro football, no? (1 of many, and that’s before considering talent distribution)
@FrancisAwartefe@ChrisLepetit@Ant1Duval And by the way I respect FIFPro (who I worked with for many years) as an organisation, it has improved a lot over the years, has some great people, and has done some great work. I just don’t think getting rid of the xfer system will benefit the majority of pro players.
@FrancisAwartefe@ChrisLepetit@Ant1Duval Net xfer income, not net spends. Such a list is illustrative (twitter not suited to much more) and you can see that these are all clubs good at recruiting/developing players. Hence redistributive effect. But you’re right, more studies (as were done in 99/00) need to be done
@FrancisAwartefe@ChrisLepetit@Ant1Duval See the lists of clubs I sent 3 tweets ago, and that’s just random stats (from a credible source) I pulled up quickly. But you’re right, FIFA/MAs should do it in a more thorough and detailed way
@ChrisLepetit@Ant1Duval Which is why a big symbolic win for FIFPro in free movement would in practice benefit mainly the richest clubs and players - and be an even bigger loss for the vast majority of pro players (and their small club employers) below the elite levels in the pyramid @FrancisAwartefe
@ChrisLepetit@Ant1Duval All these clubs in turn use the money to 1. cover their losses (mainly from player salaries) to stay competitive, as well 2. transfer fees (out) to smaller clubs further down the pyramid (who, in turn, mainly use it to cover their losses [player salaries etc), and so on.
@Ant1Duval With a small number of notable exceptions on specific issues where v good argumentation was brought (e.g. xfer system 2001, central mktg 2003, FFP 2010)
@Ant1Duval Unfortunately the « governing bodies », whilst good at lobbying and capturing EU bodies/people, have rarely properly and convincingly articulated what they say are in favour of (pyramid, specificity, CB, solidarity, etc etc).
