@J_Tanswell Appalling refereeing (remember the same at Palace a few years back?) but we brought this on ourselves with a no-show performance. Sadly our mid-season slump ultimately cost us – we were always playing catch up from then onwards – it’s to our credit we took it to the final day.
@J_Tanswell Concerning number of 90+ minute goals being conceded by us. Seems to have been a club trait for over 30 years (I recall it being a particular problem in the mid-to-late 90s – maybe it’s my own bias in focusing on it too much, but we never really seem to have shaken the habit.
@Son_Lyme Yeh that third goal conceded at PSG was the killer in my view. An awful lot of 50/50 scenarios and pure dumb luck went against us over the two legs, yet we still gave it everything and came within a whisker of taking it to extra time. Could not be prouder of the fight we showed.
Absolutely gutted but could not be prouder of what Aston Villa did tonight. Whatever the missed opportunities, we won on the night and we’ve proven we can compete on the biggest stage in Europe (we beat Bayern too)… five years after we were plying our trade in the Championship.
@Son_Lyme Just shows you what we can achieve when we put our minds to it. We only need 5th to get another crack next year and all signs point to us being able to do it. Devastated, yes – and full of regret at the missed opportunities – but we came closer to winning than I thought we would.
@Son_Lyme This absolutely. The same people (here anyway) who shout “leave politics out of football” as soon as players take the knee for BLM or wear rainbow laces. Yet you & I know they wouldn’t be complaining if players were taking the knee in support of eg. the Rwanda deportation project
@J_Tanswell Thank goodness. Was honestly fearing the worst when Celtic equalised. Watkins’ penalty miss looked like it would epitomise the way the night would go. An incredible achievement.
Duran not getting on tells all. Gutted he’s going but the deal likely suits all parties to be honest.
@Son_Lyme@J_Tanswell What angers me is that VAR rules seem to overly protect the referee’s right to make their own decision (in fact, this was explicitly stated when first introduced). VAR shouldn’t be about
protecting the referee’s authority – it should be about reaching the right decision. End of.
@J_Tanswell I’ve never had a problem with VAR as a concept but I have a huge problem with the way in which it’s been implemented. I imagine (and hope) it merely serves as a stepping stone to more AI and automated officiating, personally – fair, correct and quick decisions should be the aim.
@ant57@paulgilly@ellsom@chris_dolan He fell from the top of the old Trinity Road stand. Happened virtually right in front of me – how he survived is anyone’s guess. It actually had a really heart-warming ending – he ended up marrying one of the nurses who helped with his rehabilitation!

@chainbear If they do change their name, I’ll be gutted as it’ll mean an end to my hopes of them opting for powertrains from a BMW off-shoot, combined with sponsorship from a well-known Northamptonshire muesli brand, so that they become Alpen Alpine-Alpina.
@chainbear @Jontys_Corner This is what I don’t understand. On the cooldown lap we’re always told “they’re picking up marbles for weight but the FIA can ask them to fit a different set”. Surely that has to work both ways, so Merc should be able to request to fit a different set to see if they’re compliant?
