Thank you @Health_Affairs for publishing our paper on insurance denials/cost-sharing for PrEP! Of 11K people, 23.7% reported a denial (ever)—8.5% for generic TDF/FTC to 48.2% for Descovy. 34.6% reported experiencing cost sharing—majority for lab-work, and among privately insured.

Finally, I want to acknowledge that the USPSTF has since expanded its requirement to cover all three forms of PrEP approved at the time (so not including, twice-yearly injectable PrEP), and that we are facing uncertainty with the USPSTF moving forward under RFK Jrs leadership.

@Health_Affairs We offer some policy interpretations, and suggest that PBM “tiering” practices, ACA noncompliant plans and billing errors may be responsible for continued denials/cost-sharing—though we note that we cannot make causal statements in this regard and more research is needed
