The Fruit Jesus Told Us to Examine
When Jesus said, "By their fruits you shall know them," He was not talking primarily about spiritual gifts, miracles, signs and wonders, popularity, fame, prophetic accuracy, charisma, or communication ability.
False ministers can possess many of those things as well.
In fact, Scripture warns us about this.
In Deuteronomy 13:1-3, God warned Israel that even if a prophet gives a sign or wonder and it comes to pass, that alone is not proof that the prophet is from God.
Jesus also said:
"Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you.'" - Matthew 7:22-23 (NIV)
Notice that these people prophesied, cast out demons, and performed miracles, yet Jesus still rejected them.
So what fruits was Jesus referring to?
The answer is found in Galatians 5:22-23:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." (NIV)
These are the fruits that reveal the true condition of a person's heart.
β’ Does this person demonstrate love, especially when it costs them something?
β’ Are they patient with difficult people?
β’ Are they kind in private and not just on public platforms?
β’ Do they exercise self-control with money, relationships, influence, and power?
β’ Are they faithful when nobody is watching?
β’ Do they walk in humility when they have every opportunity to exalt themselves?
These are character fruits.
Character reveals what gifts can hide.
Many people can perform before crowds, but very few can consistently bear the fruit of the Spirit.
A person's true identity is often revealed in secret long before it is revealed on a stage.
The gifts of the Spirit can attract people. But the fruit of the Spirit reveals the tree.
