In three hours from now, 2 years ago, I told Uzi to go to bed. He was sitting at the kitchen table, watching YouTube on his phone. I gave him a hug, and ruffled his hair. As he started to run towards the stairs leading up to his bedroom I told him I loved him. “I love you too, dad.” Was the last thing he said to me.
He went to bed. I went to bed. The thought never crossed my mind that that would be the last time I would see him alive. A little over 12 hours before he was murdered.
In my mind I go back to May 23rd over and over. I wish I would have told my kids they could skip the rest of the week from school. I wish I would have taken off work to see that last assembly. I wish that it was being your kids to work day.
Anything.
Anything so Uzi would still be here. Anything so he could be going into 7th grade this year.
Anything so he would turn 13 in August and I could by him his first razor as is tradition in my family.
Anything at all so I could hear his voice and his laughter, feel his hug and his love.
I’m damaged beyond repair, as is my wife and my other children. Uzi was truly one of a kind, the light when it was dark, the joy when all else failed.
I wish I could relive 10 oclock , May 23rd 2022 over and over like Groundhog Day.
That would be bliss.
The Mayor Pro Tem read a prepared statement seemingly acknowledging Uvalde Police Department failures but did not outline any specific remedies apart from new police chief Homer Delgado’s ongoing review of policies and planned restructuring.

Just as you shouldn't be able to buy a gun without passing a background check, you shouldn't be able to sell a gun without running a background check. Last week, ATF issued a proposed rule to expand background checks to more gun sales by requiring more sellers to get licensed—especially those at gun shows and online marketplaces.
Thanks to the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and @POTUS's executive action laying the groundwork, this proposed rule will move us closer to background checks on all gun sales in all 50 states.
It’s been 486 days since Uzi was slaughtered in his school.
Nothing has changed in Texas.
Today we will be at the @WhiteHouse as the President introduces the Office of Gun Violence Prevention.
An amazing step in the right direction.
Let’s get it!
I’m first on the ballot. I visited the cemetery before attending the ballot drawing. I saw a single yellow flower as soon as I opened my car door. Thanks for the sign, Lex 💛

Today has been a rough one. We just got back to Uvalde. Spent the day traveling home from DC on what was the last time we saw Uzi, as we had his funeral, a year ago today.
A 10 year olds casket is tiny, as you can see.
Today we honor Uzi, as we do everyday.
Going into Robb elementary today was one of the most difficult experiences I’ve ever had. Bullet holes none higher than my chest line covered the room walls.
Blood covered light switches. Desks flipped as make shift coverage. The word “clear” written on each door except111 & 112
.@HEB what is the point of the Mueller HEB in Austin? It was undersized when built and a stressful hellscape today. Bring us more plus HEBs in town please!

The story of a mother who sprinted, barefoot, to Robb elementary and begged to sit with her murdered 10-yr old daughter so she wouldn't be alone.
Don't look away from this story. One year since Uvalde:
