When Russia struck the National Chornobyl Museum in Kyiv on 24 May this year, it did not target just another building. It targeted one of Ukraine's most important places of memory.

A museum that preserves the truth about one of the greatest man-made disasters in history and the lives forever changed by it. The vivid evidence of how the Soviet regime killed people and destroyed their lives by spreading propaganda and lies.

The museum reopened only weeks earlier, after four years of careful restoration to mark the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster. It brought together authentic artefacts, testimonies, newly accessible archives and the stories of the liquidators and thousands of ordinary people whose lives were shattered in 1986.

This was not a random strike.

It was a deliberate attack on history and truth.
For decades, the Soviet regime concealed facts, manipulated information and silenced those who spoke the truth about Chornobyl. Today, Russia wages another war against the truth. Not only with missiles, but also with propaganda, disinformation and attempts to erase evidence of its own crimes.

That is why museums like Chornobyl matter. They are not only guardians of history. They are part of Ukraine's resilience against hybrid warfare. They preserve facts where others manufacture lies. They give names and faces to people whom propaganda would rather erase.

Russia first occupied the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone in 2022. It later damaged the protective confinement over Reactor 4. Now it has struck the museum that keeps the memory of Chornobyl alive.
