El lunes 24 de marzo de 1980, el arzobispo salvadoreño Óscar Arnulfo Romero fue asesinado de un disparo en el pecho mientras celebraba una homilía en la capilla del hospital La Divina Providencia, en San Salvador. Su muerte, según fuentes oficiales, se debió a sus constantes denuncias contra la dictadura militar de extrema derecha que gobernaba El Salvador en esos años y a su defensa de los pobres y los derechos humanos.

El día anterior, durante la misa del domingo 23 de marzo, Monseñor Romero dirigió un mensaje firme a los militares, pidiéndoles que detuvieran la represión contra los campesinos:

“Yo quisiera hacer un llamamiento a los hombres del ejército y la policía. Hermanos, son de nuestro mismo pueblo, matan a sus mismos hermanos campesinos. Ante una orden de matar que dé un hombre, debe prevalecer la ley de Dios que dice: ‘No matar’. Ningún soldado está obligado a obedecer una orden contra la ley de Dios”.

Al día siguiente, un suboficial de la Guardia Nacional le disparó desde un vehículo frente a la puerta de la capilla.

Poco después de este crimen, Rubén Blades escribió ‘El Padre Antonio y el Monaguillo Andrés’ en homenaje a Monseñor Romero y la grabó con su banda Seis del Solar para el álbum ‘Buscando América’, publicado en 1984 bajo el sello Elektra Records. Treinta y ocho años después de su asesinato, Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero fue canonizado y declarado santo por el Papa Francisco el 14 de octubre de 2018, sellando así un legado que trascendió la violencia para convertirse en símbolo de fe, justicia y memoria.
